Old School Wins An Overtime Thriller

July 17, 2009 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

On a clear summer night in Denver, Colorado, the "Old School" took on the "Young Guns" in the 2009 MLL All-Star Game at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Amongst 10,123 excited fans and live television audience came a highly entertaining, high scoring and record breaking game. The Old School beat the Young Guns 22-21 in overtime. Brodie Merrill (Toronto) scored the game winner in the extra session, but it was Brian Langtry (Denver) who was the Bud Light MVP with his record breaking three two-point goals in front of his hometown fans. This breaks the record previously held by Adam Doneger from the 2003 All-Star game. Langtry also lead all players in points with seven, three two-pointers and an assist.

It was the Old School's first victory against the Young Guns in two All-Star meetings. The teams combined to score a total of 43 points and a combined 23 assists. Merrick Thompson (Toronto) and Brendan Mundorf (Denver) were two of the five players that combined for "Hat Tricks" for the game.

The Old School built a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter on goals by veterans Langtry (a two-pointer), Anthony Kelly (Chicago), and Spencer Ford (Washington). But the Young guys weren't done yet. Following goals by Youngsters Matt Danowksi (Long Island) and Kenny Nims (Chicago), it was Denver Outlaws and Young Guns goaltender Jesse Schwartzman who found the back of the net to tie things up at 10.

But it was another goaltender known for scoring goals, Toronto's Brett Queener (Toronto), who would really steal the show.

The winners of the Bud Light Skills Competition were Thompson ho won the Two-Point Contest, Rabil with a record 111 mph rocket to win the Fastest Shot and Queener won the Freestyle Contest. On his second attempt, Queener started off with a dance to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and ended it with a moonwalk/between the legs shot and a goal. During the Fastest Shot Competition, the record previously held by Anthony Kelly (Chicago) with a 109 mph shot in 2008 was broken twice. The first person to break it was rookie Max Siebald (Denver) who had a 110 mph shot before Rabil took the win.

Kelly was 22-40 in faceoffs against Alex Smith (Washington) and Mike Gabel (Chicago) got the win of all the goalies playing. He played 35:31 and made nine saves of 19 shots.

Paul Rabil and Merrick Thomson lead the Young Guns in scoring with 5 points apiece.

Major League Lacrosse was honored to have Ofek Shmool, from West Hills, California, in town to serve as Honorary Captain. Shmool was in attendance with his family courtesy of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants extraordinary experiences for children with life threatening illnesses.
