The Central Hockey League has today announced that the Oklahoma City Blazers will serve as the host team for the 2003 CHL All-Star Game. At a press conference today in Oklahoma City, held in front of the New Downtown Arena, the official announcement was made. The New Downtown Arena is currently under construction, and will accommodate 18,000 seats for hockey games once completed early this summer. Following today's announcement, special guests and media members on hand were given a tour of the new facility.
"The Oklahoma City Blazers organization has continually proven to be one of the most successful franchises not only within the CHL, but in all of professional hockey," said CHL President Brad Treliving, on hand for the announcement. "We are extremely excited to bring the CHL's showcase event to Oklahoma City and the beautiful New Downtown Arena. We are highly confident that the Blazers organization will put together a first-class event and provide a most enjoyable experience for all in attendance."
The specific dates for the CHL All-Star Game and surrounding events have not yet been announced. The 2002 CHL All-Star Game took place February 1st in Corpus Christi, TX, with the Northern Conference All-Stars defeating the Southern Conference All-Stars 7-4 behind outstanding goaltending from Fort Worth's Kory Cooper (20 saves on 20 shots) and four-point performances by Memphis' Don Parsons and Amarillo's Dorian Anneck.
"The All-Star Game is an exciting event," said Blazer general manager Chris Presson. "In addition to having the opportunity to showcase the best talent in our league, we will have the chance to show off our new state-of-the-art building in Oklahoma City." Oklahoma City will welcome their second CHL All-Star Game, having hosted the event in January of 1999.
The Oklahoma City Blazers are widely regarded as one of the most successful organizations in all of professional sport, having averaged over 9,000 fans per game the last five seasons. This season, the Blazers averaged 8,849 fans per contest, which currently leads all of North American minor professional hockey. Oklahoma City has also claimed two Central Hockey League playoff championships (1995/1996 and 2000/2001) and won the Northwest Division title in the recently completed 2001/2002 regular season.
