Today's Game: The Oklahoma City Dodgers look to bounce back from Wednesday's loss and take the lead in their series against the El Paso Chihuahuas at 7:35 p.m. CT at Southwest University Park...The Dodgers pace the Pacific Coast League with a 46-28 record and have a five-game lead ahead of second-place El Paso in the East Division...Tonight the Dodgers reach the halfway point of their 150-game season.
Last Game: The El Paso Chihuahuas racked up 14 runs on 19 hits, including seven doubles and nine extra-base hits, sending the Oklahoma City Dodgers to a 14-3 loss Wednesday night at Southwest University Park. The game got off to a good start for the Dodgers, as Jason Martin hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning for quick 2-0 lead. But in a sign of things to come, the Chihuahuas tied the game on a pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the first inning. After El Paso took a 4-2 lead in the second inning, Drew Avans tripled in the top of the third and scored on a wild pitch to get the Dodgers within one run. El Paso then scored the game's final 10 runs, with two in the third, three in the sixth and five in the eighth.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Jon Duplantier (4-0) starts for a second straight turn in the rotation after beginning the season in the bullpen...He made his first start of the season June 24 against Round Rock in OKC, pitching a season-high 3.2 innings, allowing two runs and three hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. Both runs scored on solo homers, and he did not factor into the decision of OKC's 4-3 win. It was his first start since July 2021...He is tied for the third-most wins on the team and opponents have batted just .197 against him. Right-handed batters are hitting just .127, but lefties are hitting .304. He's holding all batters to a .173 clip with runners on base...Duplantier was selected by the Dodgers from the Giants in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 Draft Dec. 8, 2021 after he had signed with the Giants just four days prior as a minor league free agent...In 2021, he made a combined seven appearances with Arizona and Triple-A Reno before suffering a season-ending lat strain July 10 against Las Vegas...He was selected in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft by Arizona out of Rice University...In three appearances this season against El Paso, Duplantier has allowed one run and one hit (a home run) over 5.0 innings with four walks and six strikeouts.
Against the Chihuahuas: 2022: 6-5 2021: 14-9 All-time: 34-24 At ELP:19-13 The Dodgers and Chihuahuas meet for their third series of 2022 and second at Southwest University Park...The Dodgers have won six of the last eight games against the Chihuahuas entering tonight, and last night's loss snapped a four-game winning streak at Southwest University Park...The teams played a three-game series in OKC May 17-19 with OKC winning, 2-1, after the teams split a six-game series in El Paso April 12-17 with OKC winning the final three games of the series...Ryan Noda, Miguel Vargas and Jason Martin each have 10 RBI and Jason Martin has hit five homers in 10 games against the Chihuahuas...The Dodgers won the 2021 series between the teams, 14-9, including 8-4 in El Paso. OKC hit 37 homers while holding El Paso to 21 home runs over the 23-game season series. Outside of 2018, OKC has won or split each season series against the Chihuahuas since Tucson's franchise relocated to El Paso for the 2014 season...Until the first series this season, OKC had not lost three straight games at Southwest University Park Dodgers started playing at the venue in 2015.
Life At the Top: At 46-28 overall this season, the Dodgers can match their season-high mark of 19 games above .500 with a win tonight...The Dodgers lost last night, but have not lost consecutive games since losing three in a row May 26-27 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, and since the skid, they have followed up each of their eight losses with a victory in the next game...OKC has won nine of the last 13 games, 11 of the last 16 games and 15 of the last 21 games. They are also 11-5 in their last 16 road games...Their 46 wins pace all Triple-A teams and their win total is tied for third-highest in the Minors...OKC has won five straight series and is now 10-1-3 through their first 14 series of the season.
In Tune In June: The Dodgers' 17-8 record so far in the month of June is the best in Triple-A and the most wins by the team in a single month since June 2021 when the team went 17-8 to post its all-time highest winning percentage in June (.680). The team has now reached at least 17 wins in June eight times during the team's Bricktown era (since 1998), but prior to last season, those win totals came over a minimum of 28 games during the month. The last OKC team with more than 17 wins in the month of June was the 2007 squad that went 19-10 (.655)...Entering today's schedule, the Dodgers have the lowest team ERA (4.26) in the PCL in June and have allowed a league-low 25 home runs this month while holding opponents to a league-low .233 average.
Texas Trip Up: Oklahoma City tied its season high with 14 runs allowed last night, and the 19 hits by El Paso were the most by an opponent since Aug. 3, 2018 at Tacoma. The Chihuahuas' seven doubles and nine extra-base hits were also opponent season highs, and it was the most doubles by an opponent since May 13, 2017 against Fresno. The 11-run margin of defeat tied the team's season high along with a 12-1 loss at Sacramento April 23...The run outburst came after the OKC pitching staff had allowed three or fewer runs in six of the previous nine games and posted a 3.38 ERA (30 ER/80.0 IP) during the stretch. Opponents had also been held to six hits or less six times in the seven previous games as opponents had batted .181 (40x221), including 8-for-50 (.160) with runners in scoring position prior to Wednesday. Last night the Chihuahuas went 19-for-44 (.432) overall and 9-for-22 (.409) with runners in scoring position. It's the most at-bats an opponent has had with RISP in a game this season...The Chihuahuas also tied an opponent season high with four stolen bases, and Esteury Ruiz became the first opponent with three steals in one game against the Dodgers since Round Rock's Anderson Tejeda on May 8, 2021. Additionally, El Paso's Taylor Kohlwey became the first opponent with three extra-base hits one game this season and the third opponent to notch a four-hit game...On the other hand, the OKC offense tied its season low with three hits, went 1-for-the-last-20 and had a season-low one at-bat with RISP.
Gettin' Miggy With It: Last night Miguel Vargas went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, extending his hitting streak to a season-best 11 games. During the hitting streak, Vargas is 16-for-42 (.381) with nine RBI, seven walks and eight runs scored. He surpassed his previous 10-game hitting streak initially set May 28-June 9. It is tied for the third-longest streak by an OKC player this season...Vargas leads the Dodgers with 82 hits, 61 runs scored, 53 RBI, 72 games played and is tied for first on the team with 41 walks and 14 doubles...Vargas paces the PCL in runs scored, ranks second in hits and total bases (140), tied for second with 41 walks and ranks third with 53 walks.
Clearance at JMart: Jason Martin homered for a second straight game last night, hitting a two-run blast in the first inning, marking his team-leading seventh home run of June. His 13 total home runs and 51 RBI this season are both second-most on the team...Martin has now hit safely in 16 of his last 18 games, batting .313 (21x67) with seven homers, two triples, four doubles and 20 RBI. He has driven in at least one run in 12 of his last 16 games (19 RBI) and in 13 of his last 18 games (20 RBI). He's also tallied at least one extra-base hit in seven of his last 11 games and eight of his last 13 games...Martin's five triples are tied for the league lead, while his 32 extra-base hits are tied for third, his RBI total is fourth-highest in the league, while his .568 SLG is fifth and his run total is tied for fifth in the PCL.
Drew Point: Drew Avans hit his fifth triple of the season last night to move into a tie for the league lead. Avans has now reached base in a season-best 15 straight games as well as 29 of his last 30 games with a plate appearance. The 15-game streak is the longest active streak by an OKC player...This month, Avans is batting .322 (28x87) with 28 hits, including 11 for extra bases, as well as a team-leading 23 runs scored and 14 walks.
Dinger Details: The Dodgers have now hit a home run in 15 of the last 16 games (23 HR) and in 21 of the last 23 games (33 HR). They have hit 33 home runs in the month of June (25 games) after hitting 35 homers in 26 games during the month of May...The Chihuahuas hit two home runs last night, both with at least one runner on base. It's the first time the team has allowed two homers with runners on base in the same game since April 14, also in El Paso. In fact, the only three times this season OKC has allowed two homers with runners on base within the same game have all been at Southwest University Park.
Late Risers: Yesterday the Dodgers scored first to snap a stretch of six straight games in which their opponent scored first. However, the Chihuahuas answered quickly in the bottom of the first inning, as opponents have scored in either the first or second inning in each of the last six games. Over the six-game stretch, the Dodgers have allowed 16 total runs in the first or second inning (12 innings) but 18 runs from the third inning on (41 innings), and 10 of those later runs came in last night's loss...Although the Dodgers' +100 run differential is best among all Triple-A teams, they have a -9 run differential within the first two innings this season.
Around the Horn: With Jason Martin reaching 51 RBI last night, OKC is the only team in the Minors with three players who have recorded 50-plus RBI...Michael Busch was held without a hit last night, but he connected on a two-run homer in Tuesday's series opener and has homered in four of his last eight games and in six of his last 13 games. At 19 home runs overall between OKC and Double-A Tulsa, Busch leads all Dodgers minor leaguers...With Drew Avans' triple last night, the Dodgers now have 27 total triples this season - tied for most in Triple-A. The Dodgers have already surpassed their 2021 season total for triples after they finished with a league-low 23 triples last season in 129 games...After not committing an error in three straight games leading into last night, the Dodgers committed three errors Wednesday, marking the ninth time this season they've committed three or more errors in a game. Their 67 errors this season are second-most in the PCL...For the ninth time in the last 10 series, the Dodgers and their opponent are tied 1-1 through two games. OKC is 8-2 in Game 3 when tied through the first two games this season, with wins in seven of the last eight instances.
