O'Brey and Brown Named Mohawks Assistants

On June 5th, Keith Griffin will begin his fifth season as the Amsterdam Mohawks head coach. The Mohawks have been extremely successful during Griffin's tenure. In the first four years of his leadership, the team has appeared in four straight championship series and come home with the title in three of them. Within those first four years, Keith has also had the privilege of working with well-polished and knowledgeable assistant coaches, who have played a vital role to the team's success. Keeping to the tradition of bringing in strong assistants, the Mohawks announced on Tuesday that Doug O'Brey and Mike Brown will round out the coaching staff for this year's team.

Doug O'Brey was a 1979 graduate of Scotia-Glenville HS (NY) and was inducted into the Scotia-Glenville Hall of Fame for his play on the diamond. In 1980-1981 he played for Hudson Valley Community College and was named to the All-Conference team. In 1982-1983 he played for Pfeiffer University in North Carolina. There he compiled a .407 batting average over two seasons and was elected to the All-Carolina Conference team in both his junior and senior years. After college, he played in the Albany Twilight League for 15 years from 1979-1993. He played on nine championship teams, was a six time All-Star, won the batting title in 1984 with a .463 average and was elected into the Albany Twilight League Hall of Fame in 1996. After coaching several high school teams, he went on to become an assistant coach at Siena College from 1987-1990 and was then hired as the head coach for the University at Albany from 1993-1998. His worked helped the Great Danes transition from a D3 team into D2 and finally into fulltime D1 status. In 2008, he helped lead the Anaconda Indians, an America Legion baseball team, to a state championship. Every summer for the past 20 years Doug runs the Doug O'Brey Baseball Schools Inc., a summer Baseball camp for boys & girls ages 8 -16. He has been a teacher for 30 years and resides in Broadalbin, NY with his wife Anne.

Mike Brown hails from Davis, CA. In high school Mike was the team MVP after batting .386 his senior season. From 2004-2005 he attended Cuesta (CA) College and was the only player in school history to bat better than .400 for a career, hitting .409 and was named the Cuesta College Athlete of the Year in 2005. From there, Mike went on to the University of Kentucky for the 2006-2007 seasons. During his senior season he reached base safely in 48 of 54 games. He finished the season as the team leader in batting average (.369) and runs scored (68), while ranking second on the team in doubles (19) and stolen bases (14). He had the eighth best average in the SEC, and ranked third in on-base percentage.

Coach Griffin and his new coaching staff will begin their title defense on June 5th in Albany against the Dutchmen.
