Visalia Rawhide News Release
The Oaks blew past the San Jose Giants (18-11/59-40) and into first place in the California League's Northern Division with a 10-2 victory Saturday night. Visalia (18-10/51-47) tied a season high with their fifth straight win.
Visalia scored runs in six of their eight offensive innings tonight, beginning in the second through fourth frames against the Giants' spot-starter Adam Gardner. In the second inning, Josh Arhart drove home Shaun Cumberland who had walked and stolen second, with a lined single into left. Fernando Perez came home on a Gardner wild pitch in the third to make it 2-0. The Oaks added two more runs in the fourth to make the score 4-0. Again, Arhart drove home Cumberland from second, this time with single to rightcenter field. Arhart himself scored on Gardner's third wild pitch. The Oaks catcher finished the night 3-3 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Meanwhile, on the mound, Jonathan Barratt worked around baserunners in each of the first four innings, but struck out the side in the fifth. Barratt finished his five shutout innings with seven strikeouts. Barratt has now thrown 11 straight shutout innings.
The Oaks put the game out of reach with runs in the sixth through eighth innings. In the sixth, Arhart drove home John Jaso, who returned from the Temporarily Inactive list with a 2-4 night. Evan Longoria added the exclamation point in the eight. He smashed a three run HR high off the leftfield foul pole to put Visalia ahead 8-0. It was Longoria's seventh HR in 20 games as an Oak, and his 11th in 28 games as a professional. Visalia's offense finished its scoring with two runs in the bottom of the eighth, while the Giants scored two meaningless runs in the ninth against Oaks closer Richard De Los Santos.
Game three of this four game series is Sunday at 5:05. Kids run the bases following the game on Kids Day.
