FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: New York, NY - August 13, 2015: The NWHL (National Women's Hockey League) announced today the signing of two additional players to the Connecticut Whale, forward Brittany Dougherty (Maine) and defenseman Shannon Doyle (Boston University).
Brittany Dougherty played for the University of Maine from 2009 to 2013. While playing for the Black Bears, Dougherty recorded 100 points (46g, 54a) in 128 games. In her junior year, she led her team with 33 points (16g, 17a) and was named a 2011-12 Hockey East Second Team All-Star. She was also invited by USA Hockey to attend the 2011 U.S. Women's National Team training camp. While at Maine, the Chesterfield, Michigan native was named Bauer Rookie of the Week (2009), Pure Hockey Player of the Week twice (2010) and Athletic Republic Player of the Week (2011).
"I am excited to be a part of history in the making, and I love the game of hockey," Dougherty said. "I will bring grit to the team and some physicality and size that will help in the offensive zone and defensive end when fighting for the pucks."
Shannon Doyle hails from Baldwin, Ontario and played defense at Boston University (BU) from 2012 to 2015. Before her time at BU, Doyle played her freshman and sophomore years at Colgate University of the ECAC (2010-2012). Doyle transferred to BU her junior year, where she appeared in all 37 games and was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star and a New England Division I All- Star - finishing the season with 24 points (6g, 18a). During her senior year with the Terriers, Doyle led the team in plus-minus at +33 and recorded 29 points (4g, 25a) - tying for third among defensemen in the NCAA. She was ranked third in the nation for blocked shots (106) and only one of three players that recorded over 100 block shots in a single season. Doyle concluded her season with the Terriers by being named to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team.
"I love the game of hockey and work extremely hard to promote the game off the ice by volunteering with younger hockey players and also promoting on the ice with a consistent and aggressive level of play that I hope Whale fans will enjoy watching," said Doyle.
