NWFA Heads into Playoffs

June 16, 2003 - National Women's Football Association (NWFA) News Release


Nashville, TN-Twenty-nine teams started the National Women's Football Association's 3rd season and played hard for ten long weeks. There were many exciting games and even with some bad weather, the teams brought in fans to watch this cool new sport.

The play off scenario is now set for the first week of play which begins June 28th. In the Northern Conference, the seedings ended up with the Demolition #1, The Phoenix #2, The Divas # 3, The Fusion #4, The Burn # 5 and The Crush #6. Both the Demolition and the Phoenix will have byes the week of the 28th but The Crush travels to DC to take on the Divas and the Burn goes to Cleveland to take on the Fusion.

In the Southern Conference the seedings ended up with The Power #1, The Locomotion #2, The Lightning #3, The Renegades #4, The Assault #5 and the Dream #6. Both The Power and the Locomotion have a bye the first week but The Dream travels to play the Oklahoma Lightning and the Assault goes to the Alabama Renegades.

The final scores for week 10 were: Demolition 33-Fusion 19, Burn 22-Divas 14, Flames 57-Passion 15, Spitfire 30-Thunder 8, Power 35-Renegades 0, Spice 34-Herricanes 6, Summit 13-Venom 6, Locomotion 22-Assault 15, Dream 54-Leopards 0, Phoenix 34-Raptors 0, Crush 18-Freeze 0, Lightning 35-Krunch 14, and the Slam 35 and the Evansville Express (2004 expansion team) 14.

"It's been quite a season for our league and all of the teams that played with us are to be congratulated. As the league grows so does the talent of our teams. Some of the teams that were winless the first year are now winning divisions and feeling that they can win the National Championship. It's truly exciting to see our league and the sport of women's full contact football grow so positively," states CEO Catherine Masters.

Breaking Big featuring Catherine Masters will air within CNN's "People in the News" as follows: Saturday, June 21 / 11am-noon, Saturday, June 21 / 5-6pm, Sunday, June 22 / 7-8pm.

The National Women's Football Association will host its 3rd National Championship game on August 2nd in Nashville, Tennessee.
