NWFA Adds California Team
Published on April 13, 2004 under National Women's Football Association (NWFA) News Release
The National Women's Football Association, the largest full contact football league in the world for women has just awarded a team license to the Antelope Valley Bombers. The Bombers are the NWFA's first West Coast team.
Kelli Harris, the new owner for the Antelope Valley Bombers, played Women's Professional Football for 2 years with both the Women's American Football League (WAFL) and the Women's American Football Conference (WAFC). Both seasons were played with the California Quake. Kelli has 7 years of coaching experience in youth sports, having coached from U-10 to U-16, both boys and girls in the California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) and the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO).
"I am so happy to bring Women's Professional Football to the Antelope Valley," states Harris. "For two years I drove from the Antelope Valley to Long Beach and finally decided I had enough. I talked with an old team-mate that introduced me to the National Women's Football Association (NWFA), and the rest is history. Once I did a little research and learned how well organized the league was and how well they represented themselves in their communities, I was happy to try and bring a team into the league! After some initial talk with Debby Lening I found out that we would be the first team on the West Coast. That was just the icing on the cake. We are making history out here, not only in women's football, but in the NWFA as well! I hope to have a VERY strong division out here on the West Coast and certainly plan on the Bombers leading the way! Just you wait - the AV Bombers will be fighting for the championship soon," adds Harris.
Currently the AV Bombers are holding practices twice a week. The Bombers encourage individuals to come out to a practice and tryout. Tuesday practices are at Desert Sands Park in Palmdale from 6-8 and Saturday practices are at McAdam's Park in Palmdale. Times on the Saturday practices vary, however, they are always posted on the team website - www.avbombers.com.
The NWFA has been featured in more than 250 major publications and TV networks including the CBS Evening News, The NBC Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The NBC Today Show, CNBC, MSNBC, CNN, The New York Times, Nickelodeon, the Boston Globe, The Washington Post and many, many local and regional networks and publications.
The 2004 NWFA World Championship Game will be held July 31st in Louisville, KY at the Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. Tickets are on sale at ticketmaster.com or at the Papa John's Cardinal Stadium ticket office.
