
Northern League Names Player and Pitcher of the Week Winners

The Northern League announced that Winnipeg Goldeyes outfielder Kevin West was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Goldeyes pitcher Bear Bay received the Pitcher of the Week honors for the period ending May 31st , 2009.
West, who is in his second season with the Goldeyes, collected a hit in all six games and batted .360 (9-for-25) with six runs scored, three doubles, three home runs, and 11 RBI in the week. The 2008 Northern League All-Star first baseman led the league with 21 total bases in that same span. Playing all 14 games in right field for the Goldeyes in '09, he currently leads the league in home runs (5), and RBI (17). West finished the 2008 Northern League season third in home runs (18), fourth in RBI (74), and fifth in extra-base hits (41) and slugging pct. (.542). The 6-2, 225-pounder was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 16th round of the 1999 MLB Amatuer Draft. After playing eight seasons in the Twins organization, spending parts of three seasons at Class AAA, he played one year in the Texas Rangers farm system. He was first signed by the Goldeyes as a free agent on March 19, 2008.
The right-handed hitter played collegiately at Mendocino College (Ukiah, CA) before turning pro at the age of 19-years-old. Over 10-plus years, West has amassed 1,100 hits and 150 home runs, while carrying a .277 career batting average.

Bay, who went 2-0 in the week for the first place Goldeyes, pitched a total of 14 innings yielding only 12 hits and three runs. All three runs allowed were on solo home runs. He also struck out eight batters while walking only one on the week, while moving his season record to a perfect 3-0.
Playing in his seventh season of professional baseball and second with the Goldeyes, Bay is off to a hot start in '09. He is 3-0 with a 3.70 ERA and currently ranks tied for the league lead in wins (3) and fifth in strikeouts (20). Last season for the Fish, he started 19 games going 8-7 with a 5.28 ERA. He finished the season ranked second in strikeouts (102).
Bay, who's birth name is Ronald, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 25th round of the 2002 MLB Amateur Draft. He played two seasons in the Cubs farm system, two in the Cleveland Indians, and one in the Texas Rangers minor leagues prior to joining the Goldeyes in '08. He played collegiately at Angelina Junior College (Lufkin, TX).
