
Northern League Names Player and Pitcher of the Month

Kansas City T-Bones second baseman Jacob Blackwood has been named Rawlings Northern League Player of the Month for August, and pitcher Brian McCullough of the Schaumburg Flyers has been selected the Rawlings Pitcher of the Month for August.
Blackwood, who currently is in position to win the Northern League Triple Crown, collected a league-high 44 hits in the month of August. He batted .370 (44-for-119) with seven doubles and 12 home runs, while posting 26 runs scored and 27 RBI in the month. He collected at least one hit in 23 of 28 games, including a 10-game span where he smacked eight home runs. On the season, Blackwood leads the league in batting (.344), home runs (30), and RBI (84).
The Northern League has not seen a Triple Crown winner since Anthony Lewis of the Duluth-Superior Dukes in 2000 accomplished the feat.
The 6-0, 210-pounder, is playing his fifth season of professional baseball and second with the T-Bones. He first signed with Kansas City on June 25th , 2009 and batted .288 over 63 games for K.C. in '09.
He previously was named the NL Player of the Week three different times in 2010 (May 31st , July 26th , and August 16th ).
Blackwood was originally selected by the Florida Marlins in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft and played parts of four seasons in their organization (he was also drafted in the 40th round of the 2005 draft by the New York Mets, but did not sign).
Players also receiving Player of the Month votes were Ray Sadler of the Kansas City T-Bones and Kevin West of the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
Brian McCullough, who has only allowed one earned run since August 1st , posted a 3-0 record with a 1.33 ERA for the Schaumburg Flyers in the month of August on his way to being named Northern League Pitcher of the Month. He appeared in 12 games for the Flyers and tied for the league lead with five saves in the month. Overall, he leads Schaumburg in appearances (31) and saves (5), and is third on the team in wins (5).
In August, the 25-year-old right-hander only yielded 15 hits over 20.1 innings while striking out 12 and walking only seven. On the season, he has only gone more than fours days without pitching three times (once over the all-star break).
The 5-11, 190-pounder, signed with Schaumburg on April 23rd , 2010. The native of Virginia Beach, VA previously played parts of three seasons in the Frontier League and had a brief stint with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in 2009 (did not allow a run over three games pitched).
Other pitchers receiving consideration for Pitcher of the Month were Willie Glen of the Gary- SouthShore RailCats and Bear Bay of the Joliet JackHammers.
