SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Jared Van Wormer scored three times on Friday, helping propel the Traverse City North Stars to a 12-0 preseason win over Blind River in the first-day of the Soo Eagles Labor Day Weekend Showcase at Pullar Stadium.
Traverse City natives played a huge role on the scoresheet, with Van Wormer (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) leading a nine-goal deluge from TC products. Jake Peacock (Bay Reps HS) and Eric Rivard (TC North Stars) scored twice each, while Eric Jones (TC Central HS) and Kyle Froese (TC Central HS) added tallies as well. Cadillac's Will Badner (Motor City NAHL) kicked in a pair of goals, with Kyle Schempp (Saginaw, MI/Compuware U18) lighting the lamp as well.
"It was a good start," said North Stars head coach Chad Fournier. "We saw some good things and some bad things, but we're working to get better every day, and we did get better today. We had a chance to get some of our younger guys some ice time in a lot of different situations."
Kyle Laslo (Fenton, MI/Osoyoos KIJHL) and (Michael Parda (Waukesha, WI/Cleveland NA3HL) split duties in net for the Stars, making 14 and 11 saves, respectively, as TC outshot the Beavers by a 44-25 margin.
"There were stretches where we didn't play very well in our own end, especially in the second (period)," Fournier added. "Those are the kinds of things we'll have to improve upon tomorrow (Saturday). We'll have our work cut out for us with Wellington, who are the defending all-Ontario champs."
The Stars and Dukes will face off on Saturday evening at 8 p.m.
