Nords Sweep Opening Weekend
October 3, 2021 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Maine Nordiques News Release
The Maine Nordiques faced off against the Danbury hat tricks for game two of the opening weekend at the Colisee looking for the home opening weekend sweep and the Hat Tricks looking to split.
The Nords started the first period with 6 shots in the first five minutes, the message was clear to generate rebounds and throw pucks to the front of the net. The Hat Tricks would fend off the Nords attack to start the game and respond with two goals, three minutes apart, to go up 2-0. The Nords would strike, as Tristan Fasig would register his first goal of the season. With less than 2 minutes to go in the period the Nords would swing to the power play and with just four seconds to go; Tristan Fasig would record his second goal of the game on a second chance opportunity in front when Filip Wiberg and Caden Pattison crashed the net hard. 2-2 after 1
The second period was back and forth through the neutral zone before the Nords were able to get some offensive chances with a power play. The Nords would only spend 9 seconds on the man advantage, before Matt Connor would register his third goal of the season off of another assist from Tyler Gaulin, who finished with five assist this weekend. Zach Whitehead would add to the Nords lead with an interception at the blue line and make a nice move on a second chance opportunity to find the back of the net. That would be four straight Nordiques goals. The Hat Tricks would pull themselves to within one, however with a goal less than two minutes later. The rest of the second was solved in the neutral zone and there wasn't any scoring after. 4-3 Nords after the second period.
The third was much like the end of the second with neutral zone play. The Hat tricks got a great chance on a breakaway but Gus Holt would make a huge stop with his glove to keep the Nords up by 1. The Hat Tricks had the momentum but Iggy Belov would change that with another 2nd chance goal. The Nords were up by 2 for less than a minute due to the Hat Tricks responding right after. Down by 1 the Hat tricks would throw everything they had at the Nords but Gus Holt would come up with some key saves and Tristan Fasig would win key D-zone face-offs down the stretch to hang on for the 5-4 victory and the opening weekend sweep.
The Nords have a bye week before headed to Johnstown to face the Tomahawks for the first time this season October 15-16.
