No games with outside teams scheduled
January 22, 2007 - World Indoor Football League 2 (WIFL 2) News Release
World Indoor Football League Commissioner Gary Tufford announced Monday, January 22 that no games with any other teams outside of the WIFL have or will be scheduled for the 2007 season despite a reported story that a game with the independent Tennessee Pioneers had been scheduled.
Nothing beyond preliminary talks for a practice or scrimmage occurred, contrary to a published report in the Daily Chattanoogan newspaper that stated the Pioneers would be playing the Columbus Lions.
"This was obviously a case of an overzealous coach from an organization outside of our league embellishing a conversation with a coach from the Columbus Lions. We get numerous requests for scrimmages, etc, especially around training camp time," Tufford said. "I can assure you that no team in the WIFL will be operating outside of our League structure.
"Our schedule has been set since November and plans are continuing for our opening game February 11 in Daytona Beach (Fla.)," Tufford added. "We're very protective of the image of our operations and felt the need to respond.
"That being said, we hope that [Head Coach] Chris Carter and the Pioneers have the best of fortune in their endeavor and invite to them to contact us to establish a better dialogue."
The WIFL has four teams -- the Lions, the Augusta (Ga.), the Daytona Beach Thunder and the Osceola (Kissimmee, Fla.) Ghostriders.
