NLL Unveils New Champion's Cup Trophy

April 29, 2004 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release

The winner of the 2004 Champion's Cup will have a beautiful new piece of hardware to take home to Buffalo or Calgary. The new Champion's Cup Trophy is a beauty, maintaining the same design as the original trophy, which was first awarded in 1998. The trophy arrived in Calgary on Thursday, and will make its way around the city for the next week leading up to the Champion's Cup Final on May 7th.

The Champion's Cup was first awarded to the Philadelphia Wings on April 28th, 1998, following their championship victory over the Baltimore Thunder. The new trophy marked the new beginning for the National Lacrosse League, which formed from the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL) prior to the start of the 1998 season. A new league and a new trophy. The Champion's Cup replaced the North American Cup, the trophy given to the annual champion of the MILL.

Much like the NHL Stanley Cup, the Champion's Cup was a hit at many a celebration party following team championships. Players would each get their turn to enjoy the Cup for a couple of days during the summer. The trophy enjoyed some good times, and had the scars to prove it.

Following six glorious summers of partying with champions from 1998 through 2003, the Champion's Cup was on its last legs and in need of replacing. The league planned to keep the same basic design and build a stronger, shinier and more durable version of the Champion's Cup.

The new Champion's Cup was built in New York. After enjoying a few days of the spring season in Manhattan, the Cup traveled to Calgary on April 29th in advance of the Champion's Cup Final on May 7th. The Cup was greeted by a full house of Calgary media and curious airport passengers upon arriving in the afternoon. The new Champion's Cup will make plenty of appearances around town over the next week--and will be awarded to the winner on May 7th.
