Nighhawks Lose Close One to Swashbucklers

The Nighthawks were back on the road after their first win of the season over the Albany Panthers and a bye week. Knoxville (1-4) went into Lake Charles, LA where they took on the (0-3) Louisiana Swashbucklers. The Swashbucklers were looking for their first win of the season and Knoxville was looking to continue to grow their momentum from their last game. Unfortunately the Nighthawks came up on the short end 36-27 as Louisiana won their first game of the season.

The Nighthawks struck first with a 14 yard run by Daccus Turman with 9:07 left in the first quarter. Then Louisiana came back with a 4 yard touchdown pass from Chris Mitchell to Will Pritchett and another touchdown pass from Mitchell to Jordan Rideaux. The score was 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Knoxville then countered with another 1 yard touchdown run by Turman again with 9:50 left in the half making the score 14-14. Swashbucklers quarterback Chris Mitchell threw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Kendrick Perry with 6:27 left in the half. Damian Huren returned a blocked field goal attempt for a touchdown to bring the first half to a close. Louisiana had a 27-14 lead at the half.

The third quarter was all Nighthawks. Knoxville struck quickly with a 40 touchdown pass from quarterback Anthony Speight to Rico Joseph. Nighthawks kicker Armando Cuko hit two clutch field goals from 15 and 31 yards, making the score 27-27 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Nighthawks defense stood strong and did not allow the Swashbucklers to score in the 3rd quarter.

The fourth quarter was a slight turnaround. Louisiana scored on a 5 yard run by Jordan Rideaux and a 46 yard field goal by Blake Bercegeay. The end result had Louisiana winning 36-27.

Nighthawks head coach Cosmo Dematteo said, "We will go back, review the tape and regroup. We have a big game against the Alabama Hammers next week as we enter the second half of the season."

Offensively for the Nighthawks, Anthony Speight, was 12-21 for 136 yards and 1 touchdown pass. Daccus Turman ran the ball for 30 yards and two touchdowns on the evening. Kicker, Armando Cuko had three extra points and two field goals. Defensively, Roosevelt Falls had 7 tackles and one sack. Gini Ibe had 5 tackles and one interception for 31 yards.

The Nighthawks will be on the road again to play the Alabama Hammers on Saturday, April 27th at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL. Game time at 8:00 pm EST and can viewed live on UStream. The Nighthawks next home game will Saturday, May 4th, at 7:00 pm EST. Single game tickets on sale.
