Newport Beach Breakers Celebrate Home Opener
July 3, 2008 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Orange County Breakers News Release
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., July 3, 2008 - The Newport Beach Breakers begin their 2008 World TeamTennis Pro League home schedule with a focus on youth in presenting Bank of America Junior Night on Saturday, July 5 against the Kansas City Explorers at Breakers Stadium at Newport Beach Country Club. The match is the Breakers' second of the season.
Bank of America Junior Night offers juniors 16 and under a $10 general admission ticket with the purchase of one adult ticket at regular price (limit four junior tickets per adult ticket. Adult general admission match tickets are $15). In addition to being among the first Southern California fans to see exciting Breakers action in the new WTT season, juniors will receive a tennis racket from WTT presenting sponsor Advanta and a Breakers t-shirt from Bank of America.
"It is through events like Bank of America Junior Night that exposes Southern California youth to the game of tennis, a sport that can be played for a lifetime on many different platforms," Breakers executive director Jeff Purser said. "Tennis has always been played at a higher standard in the Southland than in most regions of the country, and one of our newest Breakers, Kaes Van't Hof, is a prime example of how a youngster can learn the game and hone his skills while growing up in Newport Beach and make it a career. Our first Bank of America Junior Tennis Night last year was such a successful hit that it only made sense to reward our youth, the future of the Southern California tennis scene, again this year."
The 2008 Breakers are led by Laguna Beach resident Lindsay Davenport and include 2008 NCAA Division I national doubles champion Kaes Van't Hof, Ramon Delgado, Michaela Pastikova and Angelika Bachmann. Breakers Stadium at Newport Beach Country Club will also shine its spotlight on marquee player opposition such as John McEnroe (New York Sportimes), Serena Williams (Washington Kastles), Martina Navratilova (Boston Lobsters) and Anna Kournikova (St. Louis Aces).
Tickets, sponsorship and more information on the Newport Beach Breakers are readily available by calling 714-352-6301 or visiting www.NewportBeachBreakers.com, where fans can purchase tickets and choose their own seats from an online seating chart that takes real-time inventory.
Individual general admission match tickets range from $15-$45. Also available are General Admission season tickets at $210; a Lefty Legends Package, for matches July 21 vs. Boston and July 22 vs. New York, for $70; and a Singles Night Package for the July 13 match vs. Washington for $45 (includes one free drink coupon, pre-match singles mingling and a special singles seating area).
The Breakers sold out five of their seven home matches in 2007 and enjoyed their largest crowd - 2,358 - during their season finale against New York, which featured McEnroe and Maria Sharapova. Nearly 15,000 fans visited Breakers Stadium at Newport Beach Country Club in 2007. Breakers Stadium (seating capacity 2,200) is located along Pacific Coast Highway, with views overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
The Breakers are owned by WTT founder Billie Jean King. Hoag Hospital Foundation has been granted the rights to manage the Breakers through 2009 by WTT with profits from the team's operations for the season benefiting Hoag Hospital.
The World TeamTennis Pro League presented by Advanta is set to begin its 33rd season. Each WTT team is comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Team matches consist of five events - one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. The first team to reach five games wins each set. A nine-point tiebreaker is played if a set reaches four-all. One point is awarded for each game won. If necessary, overtime and a supertiebreaker are played to determine the outright winner of the match.
