New Jersey Ironmen News Release

NEWARK, NJ (February 11, 2008) - The New Jersey Ironmen (10-9) announced today that Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker will be the club honorary captain for the Thursday, February 21st "School Day Game". Slated for an 11:00 a.m. kickoff, the Ironmen will host the California Cougars at Prudential Center in a day surrounded by educational programming relative to fitness and nutrition.

"While we have a goal of constant outreach to everyone throughout the local communities in New Jersey, it is nice to have an event focused on the leaders of tomorrow," Ironmen General Manager Tony Novo stated about the School Day Game activities. "With the backing of Mayor Cory A. Booker and the City of Newark, it upgrades the whole day exponentially."

The Ironmen School Day Game program is designed to give kids an understanding about the importance of a healthy lifestyle as well as give them the building blocks to make informed decisions about their diet and activities. The educational programming will be a joint effort with FAN4Kids, a New Jersey based nonprofit organization that provides weekly interactive fitness and nutrition education to schools in Newark, Hoboken and New York City. FAN4Kids instructors have been educating and empowering thousands of children and their parents through its school-based program over the last four years. The role models for these lessons will be the Ironmen players, coaches and staff. The team and FAN4Kids will produce a student workbook that will include classroom lessons and activities in addition to information to take home that will reinforce important messages about fitness and nutrition. Nutritional lunches will be available to those kids in attendance, and students will also get an exclusive opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the New Jersey Ironmen and Prudential Center.

Any schools that would be interested in attending the Ironmen School Day Game program can contact the club directly by calling 1-800-IRONMEN.

Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker began his political career in 1998 after serving as Staff Attorney for the Urban Justice Center and as a Program Coordinator of the Newark Youth Project. He rose to prominence by upsetting a four-term incumbent to become Newark's Central Ward Councilman. During his four years of service, he earned a reputation as a leader with innovative ideas and bold actions, from increasing security in public housing to building new playgrounds. For this work, he has been recognized in numerous publications including, among others, Time Magazine, Esquire Magazine (naming him one of the country's 40 Best and Brightest in December 2002), New Jersey Monthly (naming him as one of New Jersey's top 40 under 40) and Black Enterprise in December 2005 (naming him to the Hot List, America's Most Powerful Players under 40). He took the oath of office as Mayor of New Jersey's largest city on July 1, 2006, becoming just the third person to govern the city since 1970.
