Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ, Feb 27--The defending Atlantic League Champion Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced today that the club re-signed former Major League shortstop Ramon Castro to a contract for the 2008 season. Castro's signing follows the announcement earlier in the week that the club had signed another former Major League middle infielder, Bobby Hill.
The 28 year-old Castro was the third leading hitter in the Atlantic League in 2007, batting a career-high .343 for the Bears. He also hit 9 home runs, had 31 extra-base hits, drove in a career-best 49 runs, and led the league with a .448 on-base percentage. On twelve different occasions a year ago, Castro contributed three or more hits in a game, despite the fact that he missed nearly five weeks of action in the middle of the season because of injury to his achilles tendon.
"Ramon Castro was one of the best players in the Atlantic League last season, and was one of the major reasons why we were able to capture the leagues' championship," said Bears Assistant General Manager of Baseball Operations Jim Cerny. "We are very excited that Ramon is returning to Newark and can't wait to see him paired up the middle with Bobby Hill this season."
Castro, a native of Venezuela, is entering is 11th season in professional baseball, having played in the Atlanta Braves, Oakland A's, and Montreal Expos organizations. He appeared in 9 games for the A's at the big league level in 2004, and has spent all or part of four years at Triple A. Three times in his career, Castro has batted better than .300 in a season.
The Bears open up defense of their 2007 Atlantic League Championship on Friday, April 25th against the Long Island Ducks before playing their home opener on Tuesday, April 29th at 7:05PM against the Bridgeport Bluefish at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
