September 23, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Newark Bears News Release

In the past few months, the Newark Bears have been about change. New owners, new attitude and now, a shakeup in management. The Newark Bears welcome former Bear, Matt Smith back to the team in his new role as General Manager. Smith has come full circle in his career as he was signed to the Newark Bears in 1999 shortly after he graduated from Rutgers University. A native of Kearny, NJ, Smith would excite baseball fans with his southpaw pitching style and his strong willed dedication to being the one of the best pitchers in the minor leagues. Smith begins his new position on October 1st and plans to bring his experience and baseball knowledge to our team of future stars. In addition to six seasons with the Bears, Smith has been pitching all over the minor league circuit, pitching for The Camden Riversharks, The Sioux Falls Canaries, The Bridgeport Bluefish and The Pennsylvania Road Warriors.

Smith has had over 300 strikeouts in his career and is no stranger to playing the outfield. Smith brings experience to the team and will breathe new life into the Newark Bears for the 2012 season.
