Newark Bears News Release

Rob DeWaters

Position: Catcher

From: Jackson, NJ

This is DeWaters first year in pro baseball, and he brings with him a fascinating story, that sounds a lot like the feature film "The Rookie." DeWaters once anchored the middle of the batting order for Florida Atlantic, a perennial Division I powerhouse, before a shoulder injury derailed what could have been a promising professional career. He is now 36 years old, a father of two and interestingly enough, an ex-MMA fighter. Last season, DeWaters served as the Bears bullpen catcher, but this year he will come full circle. DeWaters will compete for a job at catcher. He worked very hard during the off-season, improving both his defensive prowess and his power stroke. Keep an eye out for DeWaters this season.
