New York/New Jersey Professional Sports Teams Unite

New York Red Bulls News Release


On Tuesday, March 2nd, 2004 from 10:30AM - 11:30AM at The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum (Tech Hall), the New York and New Jersey professional sports teams come together for the first time to announce the formation of a united effort to bring awareness to issues that face our community. Representatives from each professional sports team will be present to announce the first focus, literacy. The teams partnered with the National Education Association (NEA), the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) and the National Education Association-New York (NEA-NY) to kick off Read Across America Day and celebrate Dr. Seuss's 100th birthday. A current player or alumnus will be joined by each team's top executive and selected mascots for this unique announcement. Each team's athlete will read "The Cat in the Hat" to local children at the Intrepid, with an appearance by the Cat himself and a book for each child to keep courtesy of NEA and Random House, to encourage reading. Following the press conference, selected athletes from the organizations will make appearances at schools in each community to read with children and continue the celebration.
