NEW YORK - The New York Empire presented by Citi improved to 2-3 on the season winning, 22-13, over the visiting Washington Kastles at Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in The Bronx.
The Empire's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Neal Skupski take no mercy when opening a match on their home court, as the duo again dominated the mixed-doubles set jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the match over the Kastles Nathan Pasha and Venus Williams.
Kirsten Flipkens joined Martinez Sanchez while Williams teamed up with Marta Kostyuk for the women's doubles and second set, won 5-3 by the Empire.
Ulises Blanch continued to impress, winning 11-of-16 first-serve points in men's singles action on his way to a 5-2 set win, giving the Empire a commanding nine-point lead heading into the final two sets of the match.
Williams returned to the court for the women's singles set and cut the Empire's lead to six, claiming a 5-2 set win over Flipkens, however the Empire's Blanch and Skupski were up to the test against the Kastles Yoshihito Nishioka and Pasha. With the final set knotted at 2-2, the Empire put their feet on the gas an took the next three games giving the Empire its second win of the season by a score of 22-13.

The Empire complete the home-and-home series with the Kastles in Washington, D.C. on Saturday and return to the Cary Leeds Center on Sunday, July 21 to host the Orlando Storm at 5 p.m. The Empire heads to Las Vegas beginning its west coast swing to face the Vegas Rollers, Orange County (Calif.) Breakers and San Diego Aviators next week.
