New York Empire News Release

Here's a quick look at the New York Empire players and how they have fared during the first week of the French Open being played at Roland Garros:

John Isner

The current American No. 1 has advanced to the third round at Roland Garros for the third consecutive year, as John Isner defeated Horacio Zeballos 6-7(8), 7-6(4), 7-6(2), 6-2 on Thursday. The 6'10" ace machine began his bid for his first Grand Slam singles title with a 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-6(7) win over New York native and 2016 Empire player Noah Rubin in the first round. The No. 9-seeded Isner will next face Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France in the third round.

Neal Skupski

Playing with his brother Ken, the Skupskis ousted the tough American pairing of Mike Bryan and Sam Querrey in the first round. The pair took the opening set, before falling to the tough Italian team of Andreas Seppi and Daniele Bracciali in the second round.

Tatjana Maria

After a first-round straight-set win over a French team, Maria and her partner Heather Watson of Great Britain will next face the 6 seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic. Maria fell to former Empire star Kirsten Flipkens in singles.

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez

Seeded No. 3 in doubles, Spain's Martinez Sanchez and Slovenian partner Andreja Klepac beat Monique Adamczak and Wang Yafan in the first round, 6-0, 6-4. Martinez Sanchez is also entered in the mixed doubles with partner Marcelo Demoliner and the tandem defeated fourth seeds Jamie Murray and Katerina Siniakova in the first round.

INAGURAL EMPIRE CUP IS THIS SATRUDAY: The New York Empire presented by Citi will sponsor its first Junior TeamTennis event, the Empire Cup, in partnership with WTT Community Tennis. On Saturday, the most competitive tennis programs from all five boroughs of New York City will convene at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, putting their best 12-and-under teams forward in hopes of claiming bragging rights throughout the city.
