New Owner to Address New Haven

January 28, 2003 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Haven Ravens News Release

The New Haven Ravens have scheduled a press conference to be held Wednesday, January 29th at 1:30 pm at Historic Yale Field to introduce their new owner, Drew Weber. Mr. Weber will address the state of the Ravens, plans for the Ravens' 2003 season at Yale Field, and the future of baseball in New Haven. Members of the public are invited and the Ravens Booster Club is especially encouraged to attend.

Weber and his wife Joann have been the owners of the Lowell Spinners, a Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, since 1997. During this period his organization has enjoyed great success. The Spinners have sold out every game since the mid-point of the 1999 season and have won two of Minor League Baseball's highest honors, the Larry MacPhail Promotional Trophy and Baseball America's Bob Freitas Award.

Weber graduated from the University of Cincinnati and New York University's Graduate Business School before meeting and marrying Joann. The Webers have two children, Michael and Kate. Michael is a news anchor at the CBS affiliate in Terre Haute, Indiana, and Kate works in management for Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Atlanta, GA.

On Monday, New Haven Ravens Principal Owner W. Edward Massey announced an agreement that contemplates the sale of the franchise to Weber. Pending Minor League Baseball's controlling interest transfer process, the sale is targeted to close in late March or early April. Massey and his ownership group have owned the team since 1992, when they were awarded an Eastern League expansion franchise. The team began play at historic Yale Field in 1994. There are still 16 years remaining on the team's 25-year lease. Opening Day 2003 is Sunday, April 6 against New Britain.

MEET THE MANAGER

The Ravens will host their annual Meet the Manager event at TK's American Cafe in downtown New Haven (285 George Street) on Wednesday, February 5. The event, which is free, will run from 5:30 to 7:30 and feature new manager Marty Pevey. Additionally, all Diamond Club members (season ticket holders) will receive a coupon for a free beverage. Pevey will talk about his plans for the coming season, drawing on his experience managing many of next year's Ravens while with Single-A Dunedin last year. Pevey, a former Major League catcher, has been a coach or manager in the Blue Jays system every year since 1996.
