New Mexico to Send Pair of Lobos to Bellingham

March 20, 2019 - West Coast League (WCL) - Bellingham Bells News Release

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Bellingham Bells have announced the addition of two players from the University of New Mexico to their 2019 roster. Derek Marshall, a redshirt-sophomore infielder and outfielder, and Jack Murano, a freshman right-handed pitcher, will head northwest from Albuquerque to join the Bells this summer.

"We are thrilled to begin a new relationship with New Mexico," general manager Stephanie Morrell said. "The Lobos are a talented program and we look forward to working with them in the seasons to come."

Marshall, a six-foot-three-inch native of Los Angeles, begins his third season at New Mexico after starting 24 games last spring. He has a homerun and three doubles to his name in 13 games so far this year.

As a redshirt-freshman, Marshall hit .245 in 38 games with eight doubles, a triple and three homeruns, which was good for second on the team.

The power-hitting Marshall prepped at Loyola High School in Los Angeles where he earned three varsity letters.

"Derek should bring nice power to the Bells lineup," Morrell said. "We anticipate he will be a player who can help bolster our offense."

Murano hails from Rio Rancho, N.M., and has appeared in one game to begin his career as a Lobo.

A 2018 graduate of Cleveland High School, Murano is a projectable right-hander who stands at six-feet-seven-inches and touches 90 mph with his fastball.

"Jack is an athletic young pitcher with a lot of upside," Morrell said. "He is known for having a three-pitch mix and excellent command of the zone. We expect him to make an immediate impact on our pitching staff."

Murano was targeted early on by New Mexico for his size, command of the strike zone and three pitch repertoire.

Marshall and Murano will debut as Bells on June 4 when they face off against the Kelowna Falcons at Joe Martin Field.
