MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact announced Thursday that the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) disciplinary committee acquitted team captain Nevio Pizzolitto from any blameworthy act related to the match on May 4 at Empire Field, in Vancouver.

The committee confirmed that Nevio Pizzolitto did not deliberately spit on a spectator, following a Nutrilite Canadian Championship game.

"I have never committed an act that could have been disrespectful to the game that I love and represent," said Pizzolitto. "I am a proud competitor who respects his opponents and its fans. Never would I have wanted to be disrespectful towards a soccer fan."

Pizzolitto was suspended after missing the first CSA hearing, last June 27, in Edmonton, even if the Impact had sent a letter excusing his absence due to an injury (he did not travel with the team for the game against FC Edmonton on June 26) and a death in his family. The suspension was lifted, following a hearing with the disciplinary committee on July 11, in Ottawa.

"I hope that our team captain's exemplary reputation will not be tarnished by this regrettable incident because in his 17 career years with the Impact, he has always been a role model on and off the field," said Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo. "I understand that the Canadian Soccer Association wants to promote respect during the games played in our country, but I don't think it is necessary to intervene in these types of situations. I'm sure the association has more important issues to manage and therefore it should be choosing its priorities more carefully."

The complaint towards Pizzolitto was dismissed and no further action will be taken by the disciplinary committee.
