
NBA "Iron Man" To Play in World Pro Basketball Challenge

Las Vegas, NV USAâFormer Los Angeles Lakers Foward, A.C. Green, announced that he is ending his brief retirement from professional basketball and will play for the ABA Select team in the inaugural World Pro Basketball Challenge to be played June 24th through the 29th, 2002 at the Cox Pavilion at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV. Former NBA and UNLV star, Reggie Theus will coach ABA Select and will be assisted by former Philadelphia and Detroit star, Earl Cureton. A three-time NBA World Champion during two separate tours of duty with the Lakers, Green is the NBA's "Iron Man" having played in a NBA record 1,192 consecutive games. Green enjoyed a 15-year NBA career that began as the Lakers' first-round draft pick (23rd overall) in 1985. After 8 seasons with the Lakers, he played 4 seasons with the Phoenix Suns, 2 seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, one season back with the Lakers and last season reunited with former Lakers head coach Pat Riley in Miami with the Heat. In addition to his distinguished NBA career, Green is also known for his moral character and dedication to helping the youth of America. He has embraced his station as a role model and started the A.C. Green Youth Foundation to "help young people build self-esteem, character and to teach moral and ethical principles to help them make responsible decisions." The other seven teams in the field are newly elected Hall Of Famer, Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his team of former NBA all stars, the Harlem Globetrotters competitive team, coached by Bernie Bickerstaff and Pooh Richardson, Team Europe (EU),The Beijing Ducks (China), OSG Phoenix (Japan), London Leopards (UK), and Vasco da Gama (Brazil). The games will be televised worldwide on ESPN INTERNATIONAL and nationally on Fox SportsNet. KFBT TV 33/Cable 6 will carry telecasts of six games live in the Las Vegas market.
Ticket prices will be $20 per session, which includes two games (5:30 and 8:00 p.m.) and parking. All session ticket packages for the entire six-day event can be purchased for $100.
