National Lacrosse League Announces Partnership with Green Sports Alliance
Published on August 1, 2011 under National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
The National Lacrosse League (NLL) has joined the Green Sports Alliance (GSA), a non-profit organization with a mission to enhance the environmental performance of sports teams and facilities.
By sharing best practices and advising on waste, energy, water and purchasing decisions the Alliance helps sports teams, venues and leagues enhance their environmental performance. The Alliance is based in the Pacific Northwest and the founding Alliance members include the Vancouver Canucks (NHL), the Seattle Storm (WNBA), the Seattle Mariners (MLB), the Seattle Seahawks (NFL), the Portland Trail Blazers (NBA) and the Seattle Sounders FC (MLS). The Washington Stealth became the first NLL franchise to join the Alliance, which now includes more than 80 venues and teams from around the world.
The NLL plans to engage its teams, players and fans in these efforts. The league will create an All-Green Team to honor the player on each team that is making the biggest positive difference in their community.
"Sound environmental practices are critical to protect our natural resources for future generations and I know that's important to our players, teams and fans", said NLL Commissioner George Daniel. "We look forward to participating with the Green Sports Alliance in their efforts to raise awareness for this great cause."
The Executive Director of the Green Sports Alliance, Martin Tull, described the announcement, "I look forward to supporting the National Lacrosse League environmental programs and working closely together through the Alliance. I applaud the leadership of Commissioner Daniel in guiding the league towards greater environmental stewardship and deeper community engagement on these critical issues."
In addition to sharing best practices and collaborating on environmental programs, the NLL will participate in this week's Green Sports Summit, where industry leaders and alliance members will meet to discuss the strategies and challenges of greening sports and facilities in the U.S. This three day summit will combine case studies, expert presentations, panel discussions and a tour of the environmental programs of the Portland Rose Garden, home to the Portland Trail Blazers.
