Nashville Venom News Release
TRENTON, NJ- The Nashville Venom (7-4) started fast and ended fast and prevailed 57-37 over the Trenton Freedom (6-6) in the Professional Indoor Football League's final regular season week. The Venom went up 29-13 midway through the second quarter. Nashville had a chance to put the game away but turned the ball over on two consecutive possessions.
The Freedom scored a TD right before the half then earned a safety to cut the lead to 29-21. They then came out after the half and scored once again on a TD pass and the Venom lead was now 29-28. Nashville answered scoring on a 32 yard TD pass from Charles McCullum (20-28, 247 yards and five TDs) to Jordan Jolly (11 catches for 179 yards and four TDs) on fourth down. The Freedom answered with nine straight points capping off a 24-7 run to take their only lead at 37-36.
Nashville's offense then woke up. After consecutive sacks by the Freedom, McCullum found WR Darrell Holmes wide open and he raced down the sidelines to give Nashville the lead once again. The Nashville defense also woke up. CB Kenny Veal picked off a pass to set up Venom kicker Christian Reed's (15 points) 16 yard field goal to give the Venom a two possession lead. CB Corry Stewart batted a pass away on fourth down with a little over a minute to go setting up a 46 yard field goal by Reed. On the ensuing kickoff, Reed kicked his third UNO of the night and Stewart closed the scoring by returning an interception for a TD.
The victory knocked Trenton out of the playoffs and gave the Venom the third seed for the start of next week's PIFL Cup Playoffs. Nashville will travel to Richmond, Virginia to take on the second seeded Richmond Raiders (8-4). Fourth seeded Lehigh Valley (6-5) will take on the top seeded Columbus Lions (8-3) in the other game. The winner of each game will play in the PIFL Cup Championship Game. Nashville is the defending champions.
