Nashua downs Newark

NEWARK, N.J. - Newark fell to visiting Nashua 5-2 in Atlantic League baseball action held Thursday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Newark ends its seven-game homestand with a 4-3 mark and will now hit the road for the first time this season, tomorrow evening in Somerset.

Nashua (5-2) opened the scoring in the third inning on Joe Kilburg's RBI single to left field. The Bears evened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning on Danny Clyburn's second home run in as many days. Nashua wasted little time forging ahead as it scored two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh, scoring its runs in the seventh on a two-run roundtripper by D.J. Boston. Newark inched closer on Jack Santora's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth which played Martinez.

For the contest, Newark was outhit 9-7 while committing two errors. The Pride made one error and left seven men on base as compared to the 10 men stranded by the Bears. Santora led the Bears with three hits while Boston and Tim Garland had two hits apiece for the Pride. Bubba Harwdick (1-0) was the winner for the Pride, striking out six and walking two in six complete innings while Steve Gagliano (0-1) absorbed the loss for Newark, fanning two and walking none in five innings. Johnny Ruffin notched his third save of the young season, retiring Bryan Britt to end the game.

As mentioned, the Bears head to Bridgewater tomorrow evening to begin a three-game weekend series with the Somerset Patriots. In Game One, Newark's Al Hawkins will oppose the Patriots' Rick Krivda. The Bears return home a week from Friday as Pennsylvania comes to town for a three-game series.
