SAN BERNARDINO, CA - Telvin Nash hit a grand slam and David Martinez was solid in his 25th start to lead the JetHawks to a 7-2 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday night at San Manuel Stadium.
Erik Castro got the scoring started for Lancaster in the second inning. After a leadoff double for Domingo Santana, Castro lined the first pitch from starter Aaron Meade over the right field fence for his 25th home run of the season.
Meade ran into more trouble in the third. Andrew Aplin singled with one out and scored on another Santana double. The next batter, Castro, was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and end Meade's night.
The left-hander was replaced by another southpaw, Alex Burkard. Burkard walked Jonathan Meyer to load the bases and Nash hit a deep drive over the left-center field fence to clear the bases and put the JetHawks up, 7-0. The grand slam was Nash's first of the year and only his second hit with the bases loaded. He was previously 1-for-15 (.067) with 11 strikeouts. The home run was his 28th of the season, tying him with San Jose's Adam Duvall for the Cal League lead.
Meade (1-2) finished allowing five runs and two home runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Martinez (9-5) was much better. The right-hander did not allow a hit or a walk until Ricky Pacione's ground ball single in the fifth inning.
Inland Empire got on the board in the sixth inning. Taylor Lindsey led off with a single and scored on a Rolando Gomez double. The ball went under the 66ers bullpen bench and Nash threw his hands up to signal a "dead ball" but the umpires did not agree allowing Lindsey to continue to run and score on the play. Kaleb Cowart followed with a hit to score Gomez.
Jorge De Leon relieved Martinez in the seventh inning and ended up finishing the game, putting together one of his best outings. He picked up his sixth save by allowing just one hit and striking out four over three scoreless innings.
With the win, the JetHawks (70-64, 33-31) lowered their magic number to four games. If Lake Elsinore finished their night with a loss, the magic number would shrink down to three.
Lancaster takes on the 66ers (63-71, 32-32) in the second game of the series at San Manuel Stadium on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. Blair Walters (2-2, 6.53) will start against Eswarlin Jimenez (0-0, 1.29).
