Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, CA - Telvin Nash blasted his 19th home run of the season to tie the game in the second inning but the Modesto Nuts broke it open with eight runs in the fourth en route to a 14-4 win in the series opener on Monday night at The Hangar.
The Nuts had jumped out to a 2-0 lead against starter Zach Grimmett (2-5) in the first inning. Brett Tanos drove in Delta Cleary Jr. with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give All-Star right-hander Christian Bergman an early lead.
Bergman (9-5) gave up the homer to Nash in the second inning to tie up the game but got plenty of run support from his offense in the fourth. Modesto sent 11 batters to the plate and every player in the lineup either scored a run or drove in a run in the inning.
With one out, Rafael Ortega hit a two-run triple to break the tie. He scored when Nash dropped a fly ball off the bat of Cleary Jr., the JetHawks first and only error of the game. Tanos followed with a double to pick up another RBI and after Kyle Parker walked, Hector Gomez drove both runners in with a triple.
Brian Streilein came out of the bullpen and allowed a Jared Clark sacrifice fly and a Jayson Langfels home run before finally ending the inning.
Lancaster got a couple runs back in the fifth inning. Alex Todd and Ben Orloff reached on two out singles and George Springer knocked them home with his seventh triple of the season. Springer hit the triple off the right field fence on a 3-0 pitch from Bergman.
The Nuts made it a 10-run deficit in the sixth inning against Streilein. Gomez singled to drive in Tanos and with two on and no outs, Jared Clark hit a three-run home run, his 13th of the season.
Grimmett, making his first start since early May, allowed nine runs - eight earned - on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings. Jason Chowning and Brad Dydalewicz combined to finish the game with three scoreless innings.
Both Tanos and Garneau tallied four hits in the game. Tanos went 4-for-6 with a three runs and two RBIs and Garneau went 4-for-5 with two doubles.
With the loss, the JetHawks have now lost five in a row for the first time this season. They are 0-5 to start the second half and dropped their overall record to 37-38. Modesto improved to 5-0 in the second half.
The teams will play game two of the three game series on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm at The Hangar. Tyson Perez (4-2, 5.47) will start against Leuris Gomez (2-2, 5.49). Local Heroes Week continues at The Hangar with AMR Night and another Two 4 Tuesday.
