Augusta GreenJackets News Release
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (10-18) were defeated by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (17-13) in Sunday's series finale by a score of 11-6.
Augusta fell behind quickly as the Pelicans scored twice in the opening frame on RBIs by Felix Stevens and Matt Warkentin as it was 2-0 Myrtle Beach after an inning of play.
That deficit would grow larger fast as the Pelicans then scored four runs in the second and three runs in the third to put the GreenJackets down 9-0.
The Pelicans would add another run on a sacrifice fly by Matt Warkentin in the fifth to push the deficit for Augusta into double figures at 10-0.
But the GreenJackets wouldn't go down without a little fight late as they manufactured a huge sixth inning, starting with an inside-the-park home run by Brian Klein that scored three runs to make it 10-3. The line would continue to move as they loaded the bases with three walks. A wild pitch allowed one run to score, followed by Kadon Morton who plated two more with a single to left to make it a 10-6.
Myrtle Beach responded by getting one of those runs back in the top of the eighth on a three-bagger by Ethan Hearn that scored Matt Warkentin to give the Pelicans an 11-6 edge.
The GreenJackets were unable to get any additional rallies going the rest of the night as the Pelicans would finish off Augusta to win the series finale 11-6, to win the series.
Luis Rodriguez (6-1) earned the win as the starter for the Pelicans with Sam Strickland (3-2) taking the defeat.
Augusta now hits the road for their longest road trip of the season starting in Delmarva on Tuesday against the Shorebirds at 7:05 p.m.
