Myrtle Beach Swept by Narrow Margins in Twin Bill

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (July 30, 2017) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans suffered a pair of narrow defeats, 4-2 and 3-2, in Sunday's doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium.

In game one, Potomac's (47-58, 14-21) Daniel Johnson promptly doubled off Myrtle Beach (56-50, 13-23) starter Thomas Hatch (4-9) to begin the bottom of the first. Two errors on the same play then scored Johnson and put Jack Sundberg on second. Two batters later, Ian Sagdal singled in Sundberg to make it 2-0. A Jakson Reetz single coupled with another Pelicans error brought in Sagdal to widen the margin to three.

That would be the only damage against Hatch, who yielded three runs, two earned, on seven hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out four against two walks. However, Luis Reyes (7-10) pitched five shutout frames to earn the win.

Matt Page doubled to begin the sixth inning and moved to third on a wild pitch. A passed ball brought him in to make it 4-0 P-Nats.

The Pelicans mounted one last charge in the seventh. P.J. Higgins walked with one out in the frame. Two batters later, Jesse Hodges singled him in. A Vimael Machin RBI single brought in Hodges to slice the Potomac lead to 4-2, but Eddy Martinez flied out to left to end the game.

Zack Short led off the finale with a single before moving to third on a Machin double. Trent Giambrone then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to put the Birds in front 1-0 just three batters into the game.

The score remained that way until the fourth inning. Martinez reached on an error to begin the frame and advanced to third on a Tyler Alamo single. A wild pitch then brought Martinez in to make it 2-0 Myrtle Beach.

Potomac found their way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. Austin Davidson singled with one out. Taylor Gushue followed with a walk before Sagdal cashed in Davidson with an RBI single to halve the Pelicans' advantage at 2-1.

That was the extent of the damage against Myrtle Beach starter Ryan Kellogg, who surrendered just one run on five hits in five frames.

P-Nats reliever Jordan Mills (2-1) pitched two perfect frames out of the bullpen to get the game into the seventh inning. With one out, Pelicans reliever Scott Effross (5-2) ceded consecutive singles to Bryan Mejia and Johnson. Both runners scored when Sundberg lined a walk-off single to left to end the ballgame, giving the Nationals a twin bill sweep and series victory.

Myrtle Beach begins a three-game series with Monday's 7 p.m. contest at Frederick. RHP Kyle Miller (2-2, 4.25 ERA) makes the start for the Birds against Keys RHP Cristian Alvarado (6-8, 5.24 ERA).
