Muskegon Thunder News Release
MUSKEGON - The Continental Indoor Football League has announced its players of the week for Week 10 (May 9-10) and Muskegon's Ernest Bentz has been tabbed Defensive Player of the Week. The 6-foot-5, 270 pound defensive end is the fourth Thunder player to earn a weekly award from the CIFL this season. Prior winners were quarterback Ryan Ferguson (Week 1), quarterback Dan Richard (Week 5) and defensive back Jon Horn (Week 6).
"The Beast" played a pivotal role in Muskegon's 55-42 victory over the Flint Phantoms on May 10th, recording four tackles for loss totaling 24 yards, including a pair of sacks equaling 15 yards. For the game, the third-year indoor professional athlete had 4.5 stops and was a constant presence in the Flint offensive backfield.
On the season, Bentz, who won the 110-meter high hurdle state title while prepping at nearby Montague High, has logged 16.5 tackles including a whopping 14 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Most opponents learn early in the game that running to Bentz's opposite side is easier than trying to contain his lethal combination of size and speed. This limits his opportunities, but often leads to further damage by teammates Eric Malloy (5 sacks) and Adam Pringle (2.5 sacks).
The 31-year-old Bentz has previous indoor experience with the Fort Wayne Fusion, Wyoming Calvary and Laredo Lobos as well as four seasons of semi-pro football with the Grand Rapids Thunder and West Michigan Storm. He is married to wife Stephanie and has three children, Kalup, Mackenzie and Bredan and works as a bail bonds agent for J & J Bail Bonds.
