Muskegon Thunder News Release

Muskegon - The Marion Mayhem stayed perfect against their rivals with a 34-33 victory at L.C. Walker Arena in downtown Muskegon on Saturday night. Marion scored first after defensive lineman Thomas McKenzie forced a Thunder fumble on the first play from scrimmage and the offense cashed in a play later as quarterback Stanley Jackson ran 22 yards for a score. From there the Thunder were forced to play catch up all evening as they answered Marion score for score until the score was 28-27. On the Thunder's fourth TD, the point after try was missed left leaving Muskegon with a one point deficit with 11:18 remaining in the game. The Thunder then recovered and grabbed their first lead of the night on a Ryan Ferguson to Tony Terrell pass. Muskegon went for two, but failed leaving the score at 33-28 at the 1:30 mark. Thirty seconds later the guests answered with Jackson's third scoring toss to Chad Bauknight, making it 34-33 after Marion failed on their own 2-point try. Muskegon then drove the ball to the Marion 11 yard with 5 seconds left for a last second FG try, but newcomer Mike Brennan had the attempt blocked as time expired, preserving the Mayhem's win. Marion led in total yards, 220-199 and won despite committing more turnovers as Dominic Thocher and Tim Gough intercepted Jackson passes in the fourth quarter and the Thunder never turned the ball over again after the first play of the game breakdown. Jackson finished with 149 yards on 18-of-32 passing while Ferguson, making his first ever CIFL start, stepped up to the challenge going 17-of-24 for 186 yards and four touchdowns to four different receivers. Muskegon and Marion will both have bye weeks next week. On Friday, March 21, Muskegon will invite the expansion Rock River Raptors to town while the Mayhem will stay on the road with a game that same night at Saginaw.
