Murray Perfect in Wild 2-0 Bees Victory

Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release


PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (9-6-0) defeated the Arizona Sundogs (6-8-3) by a 2-0 score in a penalty filled contest on Saturday night. In addition to the combined 91 penalty minutes called between the two teams Killer Bees goalie John Murray made 37 saves on his way to the shutout. Aaron Lee and Jake Hauswirth recorded goals for the Bees.

The first period went by with neither team gaining much of advantage but physical play was strong leading up to the fireworks that would explode in the second period.

The Bees took the lead in the second period as Aaron Lee scored his 12th goal of the season after picking up a deflected AJ Mikkelsen shot. Lee took the puck and quickly roofed a puck to the high glove side.

The physical play finally came to a head at the 13:12 and 14:54 marks as Aaron Boogaard and Adam Smyth tangled then following their bout Jason Beeman and Tyler Matheson went after each other.

The Bees seemed to take a 2-0 lead with 15:17 mark after Brandon Campos went coast to coast and backhanded the puck past Levente Szuper however the goal would be called off due to a high sticking major against Tomas Klempa.

The penalty on Klempa led to a line brawl between the Bees and Sundogs resulting in the ejection of Kyle Radke and fighting majors to Nicolas Rioux and Patrick Schafer. In addition Tim Billingsley picked up a rough minor as the ten players tangled on the ice.

Just two minutes later Killer Bees goalie John Murray was issued a roughing penalty after him and Samson Mahbod collided.

When Bees coach Terry Ruskowski was able to talk to the referee about the call he was issued an abuse of officials minor and was ejected from the game. The period ended with Luke Erickson being issued a minor for goalie interference and the Bees holding a 1-0 lead.

The Bees increased their lead to two goals at the 9:10 mark of the third as Jake Hauswirth ripped a shot from the point for sixth goal of the season. Tim Billingsley earned the assist for his second point in as many games.

John Murray and the Killer Bees defense buckled down for the rest of the third period preserving the victory and the shutout for the Bees. Murray made 37 saves in the shutout.

The Killer Bees and Arizona Sundogs will tangle again Friday night but shift venues to the State Farm Arena. The Bees and Sundogs will be Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 843-7825 or visiting killerbeehockey.com.
