Mississippi Mudcats News Release
(Tupelo, MS) The Mississippi MudCats of the AIFA continued their undefeated season this past Saturday night, when they beat the Augusta Colts 68 to 51 at the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo.
Trey Crum, the MudCats' kicker, who is a former Delta State University standout, continued his kicking accuracy with 2 UNO kicks, one of which was his first kick of the game and one his final kick of the game. He made 7 of his 8 extra point kicks and provided a 53 yard field goal for a total of 10 points in the game.
Maurice Avery, a wide receiver who formerly played for the University of Memphis, was the lead scorer for the MudCats with 2 touchdown receptions from QB Tommy Jones. One touchdown reception was the result of a 30 yard pass and his first touchdown of the night was a 50 yard field goal return.
Darryl Carter, a wide receiver who is in his 6th year of Arena Football, continues to lead the MudCats as their number 1 scorer. He produced 2 - 40 yard touchdown passes from Tommy Jones for a total of 12 points, bringing his season total to 96 points scored for the MudCats.
The defense and offense both shined in this game; Ben Witcher, a DB from Little Rock, Ark had a 29 yard interception that he returned for a touchdown in the 1st quarter. Naton Stewart, a DE/LB had a blocked field goal that he returned for a touchdown in the 2nd quarter. And backup QB Aries Nelson, produced a 2 yard touchdown of his own in the 4th quarter.
Last, but not least, Josh Smith, wide receiver and fan favorite from Boise State produced one 14 yard touchdown pass from Tommy Jones and ran for 2 points. Smith also provided the comic relief of the night, when he fielded a Colts kickoff and made it about 15 yards and tried to keep going for another yard as his pants unraveled in the defender's hands. Smith was quoted as saying, "I guess that's every athlete's nightmare and definitely why we wear more than one layer." He quickly changed pants and returned to the game.
As the MudCats approach their half way mark of the season, they are the number 2 seed in the AIFA. Out of 16 teams, they trail behind Wyoming by only 4 points; Wyoming has scored 389 points for the season and the MudCats have scored 385 points.
The MudCats will host the Florence Phantoms from Florence, SC on May 3rd at the BancorpSouth Arena in Tupelo. Updated information on the MudCats can be found at www.mississippimudcats.com. For tickets, call the Arena Box Office at 662-841-6528.
