Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Starter Ryan Tucker pitched six scoreless innings with two hits on Wednesday night holding down the Jacksonville Suns (21-25), while Lorenzo Scott went four-for-four at the plate leading the Carolina Mudcats (27-19) to a 5-0 victory in front of 1,674 at Five County Stadium.
Tucker (3-2) picked up the win for the Mudcats with one walk and six strikeouts over six innings of work. Mario Alvarez (1-5) fell in the loss for Jacksonville, allowing three runs on seven hits in three innings before leaving with injury. The Mudcats now lead the season series eight games to three.
The Mudcats opened the scoring in the third inning against Alvarez when Lorenzo Scott belted his fourth homerun of the season for a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame Gaby Sanchez singled home Chris Coghlan for a 2-0 advantage. Lee Mitchell then doubled home Sanchez for a 3-0 lead.
Carolina added an unearned run off of Suns reliever Zach Hammes in the fifth inning. Chris Coghlan reached on a leadoff error, and later scored on a groundout RBI from Manuel Mayorson for a 4-0 lead. Hammes allowed the one unearned run on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
On the other side, Tucker had his way with the Jacksonville offense in his third outing against the Suns. Jacksonville found only two hits against Tucker in his six innings, an infield single from Jamie Hoffmann during the second inning and a fifth inning leadoff double from Russell Mitchell. A first inning walk and fielder's choice were the only other baserunners against Tucker.
The Mudcats finished the scoring in the eighth inning as Lorenzo Scott capped off his night with an RBI single to score Andy Jenkins for a 5-0 score.
Suns LH Clayton Kershaw will face Mudcats RH Chris Volstad Thursday in an outstanding pitching battle. Fans can follow the action in Jacksonville on AM 930 The Fox or online at jaxsuns.com.
