Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Renegades are pleased to announce the signing of import defensive back Syniker Taylor and import linebacker Michael Gholar to one-year contracts with a club option for a second season.

Both players are outstanding athletes who played two sports at their respective American colleges.

"Michael and Syniker are both quality football players, and we expect them to provide strong competition in our upcoming training camp," said Eric Tillman, general manager of the Renegades.

"As evidence of their unique athletic abilities, these young men are two of a select few who have excelled at a high level in two different sports in a league as prestigious as the Southeastern Conference," added Tillman.

Taylor, 24, spent four years as a standout defensive back at the University of Mississippi, and also played one season (1999-2000) with the Ole Miss Rebels basketball team.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound native of Gulfport, Mississippi, was named to the Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference all-star team in his junior and senior seasons and was rated among the top 20 safeties in U.S. college football. He also played cornerback in college.

Gholar, who turns 26 later this month, played four seasons of basketball at the University of Southern Mississippi and was spent a fifth year of college sports during the 2002 season with the school's football team.

Noted for his astounding jumping ability and quickness, Gholar made a quick adjustment to college football. On his first play against Oregon, he blocked a field goal attempt. During his only football season, Gholar ranked third on his team with 66 tackles. He also contributed three sacks and another blocked field goal.

Gholar (6-foot-4, 210 pounds) excelled at quarterback as an all-state calibre player in high school, but chose to play basketball in college.
