Manitoba Moose News Release
Discipline, or a lack there of, was the story of Game 1 between the Manitoba Moose (0-2) and Hamilton Bulldogs (2-0). While the Bulldogs didn't get 10 power plays like in the series opener, they did capitalize early with their first goal of Game 2 scored on the man advantage. Hamilton's depth scorers provided the rest of the offence needed in a 4-2 win in Game 2. Ryan Russell scored the game winner in front of the 2,911 in attendance at Copps Coliseum while goalie Drew MacIntyre made 24 saves as the home team secured their second win of the series.
Manitoba's line-up stayed the same as Game 1 while Hamilton added Brandon, Manitoba native Ryan White. The gritty forward was re-assigned to the Bulldogs following the Montreal Canadiens first round playoff exit.
The Moose got off to a favourable start when Kevin Clark opened the scoring at 2:43 of the first period. His third goal of the playoffs, assisted by Chris Tanev and Jordan Schroeder, gave the visitors an early lead in Game 2.
The determining factor in Game 1 was the number of power plays awarded to the Bulldogs. Hamilton made the Moose pay on their first penalty of Game 2 when Manitoba's Rick Rypien was assessed a double minor for high sticking at 6:24. During the second half of the four-minute minor, Hamilton defenceman Mathieu Carle threaded a wrist shot from the point through a screen of players that found the net behind Eddie Lack at 9:08.
By the first intermission, Lack had faced 17 first period shots by the Bulldogs but was only beaten once on Carle's power play marker. The Moose were able to reply with four of their own shots on Drew MacIntyre finding the twine once for a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes.
Hamilton forward Andreas Engqvist stole the puck in the Moose zone and threw the puck on net with teammate Ryan Russell on the doorstep to clean up the mess at 14:44 of the second period. Russell's third goal of the playoffs broke the 1-1 draw giving the home team a lead for the first time in Game 2.
A pair of toe saves late in the second period by each goalie kept the score at 2-1 as Drew MacIntyre denied Kevin Clark at the right side of the net, then going the other way Ryan White crashed the Moose net after charging wide down the left wing wall and found Eddie Lack's foot as he tried to stuff the puck into the far side. The Moose outshot the Bulldogs 9-6 in the second period but were outscored by one goal.
Hamilton extended their lead at early in the third period when a hard forecheck by the Bulldogs led to a centering feed by Ryan White and a quick shot past Eddie Lack by Gabriel Dumont. The home team went up 3-1 with 15:38 left to play in the game.
Manitoba's only goal scorer played a major role in preventing a fourth Hamilton goal late in the third period. Bulldogs forward Andrew Conboy flew out of the penalty box and picked up the puck for a partial breakaway. It would have been a clear break if not for Kevin Clark's back checking, interfering enough to help goalie Eddie Lack handle Conboy's dangerous scoring chance.
That fourth goal came with 0:49 remaining but there was nothing Eddie Lack could do while sitting on the bench. With the Moose goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Hamilton's Gabriel Dumont threw an easy empty net shot from the offensive blue line to give him
Down by three goals, the visitors didn't go quietly as Moose defenceman Chris Tanev scored on a booming slap shot from the blue line with 0:29 left. Tanev, scoring his second point of the night, brought the Moose to within two goals once again.
With very little time left to make up the 4-2 deficit, the Bulldogs finished off the final half-minute to preserve their second win of the series. Bulldogs goalie Drew MacIntyre made 24 saves to help his team capture the victory.
The Moose will play their first home game of the North Division Final on Tuesday night at MTS Centre when they host the Bulldogs for Game 3 on May 3. Game 4 and potentially Game 5 will also go down at Manitoba's home rink on Wednesday & Friday, May 4 & 6. All game times are 7:30 p.m. CT when Brian Munz and Jim Toth call the action live from MTS Centre on CJOB 68. Listen online at www.cjob.com.
