Manitoba Moose News Release
Veterans Jason Jaffray and Jason Krog each scored a pair of goals while Guillaume Desbiens notched a single on Thursday night to put the Moose over the Marlies 5-2 in Game 5 at the Ricoh Coliseum. Manitoba now holds a 3-2 series edge over Toronto with Game 6 being played at the MTS Centre on Saturday night. Goaltender Cory Schneider stopped an impressive 38 shots in his fifth consecutive start against the Marlies.
For the fifth consecutive game goaltenders Cory Schneider and Justin Pogge manned opposite ends of the ice as Game 5 between the Moose and Marlies got underway at the Ricoh Coliseum.
Manitoba earned the first powerplay of the night when Jiri Tlusty was handed a two-minute minor for hooking at 5:59. Directly after the face-off Jason Krog fed the puck to Jason Jaffray. Only six seconds into the man-advantage, Jaffray fired a wrist shot into Pogge's net to open the scoring and give the Moose a 1-0 edge.
Dusty Collins' interference sentence put the Moose on the penalty kill at 6:49. Despite racking up two shots on the five-on-four, the Marlies were unable to solve Schneider.
With 53 seconds to go in the first period, the Marlies found their way onto the scoreboard. Anton Stralman's blast from the point flew passed a screened Schneider to knot the game at one heading into the middle frame.
Two consecutive penalties to Toronto put the Moose on the powerplay for the opening of the second period. The visitors were able to bring their shot count to 12 on their second and third man-advantages, but couldn't make any of them count.
Near the midway point of the game Darryl Boyce escaped on a breakaway but Schneider denied his attempt with his glove to keep the game tied at one.
With 2:03 left in the second, Schneider made the initial save on Jaime Sifers shot, but Darryl Boyce chipped in the rebound for a 2-1 tally. The Marlies didn't enjoy their lead for long as Jason Krog slide the puck passed Pogge to tie the contest at two after 40 minutes of play.
At 10:33 the Moose reclaimed the lead. Jason Jaffray wrapped the puck around the net and jammed the bullet between Pogge and his left goal post for a 3-2 lead. Moments later, the Moose connected again. From the corner Jason Krog snipped the puck into the net, his second of night, to double up the Marlies 4-2.
At 15:44 Guillaume Desbiens earned his third point of the night by adding a goal to his two helpers. With help from Mark Cullen and Travis Ramsey, Desbiens scored his second goal of the playoffs to put the Moose on top 5-2.
