June 19, 2018 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Amsterdam Mohawks News Release
The Amsterdam Mohawks took advantage of the Adirondack Trailblazers' struggling pitching staff as they slugged their way towards a 14-8 win at Shuttlesworth Park on Tuesday night. Amsterdam plated their 14 runs on 17 hits and 4 walks, including 4 home runs.
Joe Genord (South Florida) hit a grand slam, Richie Nizza (FAU) smacked a 2-run homer, and Richie Barrella (Manhattan) and Shayne Muntz (Wake Forest) each added solo shots. Nizza went 3-for-4 with that home run, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI's, and Genord went 1-for-5 with a run scored and 5 RBI's. Julio Marcano (NJIT) went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's to lead the Trailblazers.
Adirondack got the scoring started immediately with 2 runs in the top of the 1st on a double by David Mercano and an error by the Mohawks. The Trailblazers would add 4 more runs in the top of the 2nd on RBI singles by John Polichetti (UMass Lowell), Julio Marcano and Vinnie Martin (UMass Lowell), increasing their lead to 6-0.
The Mohawks wouldn't take long to retaliate, as they responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd on a Barrella solo home run, a Mike Antico (St. John's) sacrifice fly, and a Mike Ludowig (Wake Forest) RBI single.
Amsterdam would take a 9-6 lead by scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, highlighted by a solo home run by Muntz and the Genord grand slam. They would add 4 more in the bottom of the 4th on a Richie Nizza 2-run home run and an RBI fielder's choice by Joe Genord that also scored an additional run on a throwing error by Adirondack.
The Trailblazers would score one run in the top of the 7th on a Tim Carroll (Siena) RBI single, but the Mohawks answered in the bottom half of the inning with a Ben Rhodes (Herkimer) RBI double to put them back up 7 runs. The Trailblazers would add a David Mercano (NJIT) sacrifice fly in the 9th to make it 14-8, but that'd be the last run of the game.
The win goes to Tyler Staffinger (NJIT), who threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving up 4 hits while striking out 4. Brett Lubreski (NJIT), who went 2.2 innings giving up 9 runs on 10 hits, is saddled with the loss.
The Mohawks will travel to Cantine Veterans Memorial Field tomorrow night to face off against the Saugerties Stallions, with start time scheduled for 7:05 PM. The Trailblazers will return home to take on the Watertown Rapids at the Robert Smith Sports Complex, with that game also having a 7:05 start time.
