Mohawks Sign Two Powerful First Basemen

April 4, 2011 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Amsterdam Mohawks News Release

The two time defending New York Collegiate League Champion Amsterdam Mohawks have announced the signing of two first basemen for the 2011 season. The Mohawks, members of the newly formed Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, will be looking for a third championship in a row, as they captured the New York Collegiate League crown the past two seasons. Dustin Selzer, a first baseman at Dartmouth College, and Brad Picha from powerhouse Paris (Tx.) Junior College, will suit up for the Mohawks in the summer of 2011. The two players will add a great deal of offense to an already talented group of players already signed by the Mohawks. Mohawks General Manager Bill Terlecky commented on the two. "These two players will be middle of the order type hitters for the Mohawks in 2011. These are two kids that will hit for both power and average and are both great character people as well. We are excited to add them to our roster and expect great things from them."

Selzer, a native of Houston, TX is a freshman at Dartmouth. After missing the first two weeks of the season with an injury, Dustin has had a great start for the perennial Ivy League power Big Green. Hitting in both the fourth and sixth spots in the lineup, Selzer is currently hitting .341 with 2 homeruns. Last year as a senior in high school, the 6'3 215 pound slugger led all Houston area high schools with 15 homeruns on the season. He continues a great relationship between Dartmouth and the Mohawks in which two players from each of the past two seasons have been huge parts of the Mohawks championship teams. In 2009, shortstop Joe Sclafani and closer Ryan Smith were major contributors for the Mohawks while in 2010, NYCBL Pitcher of the Year Kyle Hunter was joined by slugging first baseman Jason Brooks on the Mohawks roster. Dartmouth has won the Ivy League championship the past two seasons and competed in NCAA Regional play as well.

Picha, a native of Stephenville, TX, is Paris (Tx.) Junior College's top player and is being recruited by several large schools around the country. The 6'3 215 left handed hitting first baseman is currently being sought after by several ACC and SEC schools as well schools in the southwest. Described as a pure hitter, Picha is currently hitting .355 with a pair of homeruns for Paris JC.

As chronicled with the infielders and outfielders, these first baseman have big shoes to fill as the Mohawks have had some exceptional talent at first base the past few years. In 2009 the Mohawks had Braden Kapteyn (Kentucky - projected top 5 round draft pick this June) and Austin Sheffield (Manhattan - cleanup hitter) and in 2010 Matt Conway (Wake Forest - projected top 5 round pick in 2012 draft) and Jason Brooks (Dartmouth - cleanup hitter)

The Mohawks open their season on Thursday June 9 against the Albany Dutchmen. They will have an opening weekend giant fireworks show after their second home game on Saturday June 11. This is the first of six fireworks shows the Mohawks have on tap for the season. Other shows will be June 24, July 1, July 3, July 15, and July 29.
