Mohawks Make Roster Changes ; Add Five Standout Players

The two time defending New York Collegiate League Champion Amsterdam Mohawks have announced the signing of five new players to replace a flurry of players that the team had signed that sustained injuries and will not be reporting to the team. They have signed two catchers, two outfielders, and one pitcher to finalize their 27 man roster, The Mohawks, members of the newly formed Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, will be looking for a third championship in a row, as they captured the New York Collegiate League crown the past two seasons.

Highly touted Josh Alexander, a right fielder the University of Utah, Andrew Green an outfielder at East Tennessee Sate University, Parker Morin from Southern Idaho Junior College (transferring to Utah), Kody Ortman from NW Shoals Junior College (AL) (transferring to Auburn), and Austin Salter from Cisco Junior College (TX) will all suit up for the Mohawks in the summer of 2011.

Mohawks President Brian Spagnola commented, "The last few years the players that we added to our roster late were real difference makers in helping us win our championships. We lost some very good players but are thrilled with the quality of players that we signed this week. Alexander is a true 5 tool player that should be exciting to watch, Morin and Ortman are both catchers who are expected to have big roles at major colleges next year, Green is an established college player, and Salter is a 6'4 right hander that is a future pro pick who throws 89-93 mph."

Alexander, a native of Phoenix, AZ is a freshman at Utah. The 6'2 195 pound outfielder was considered one of the top prospects in the 2010 Major League Draft and was a 19th round draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds. He decided to fore-go signing and attended Utah instead. He is considered a 5 tool player who possesses top speed, a strong throwing arm, and power. After missing the beginning part of the season due to injury this spring, Josh is starting to get into a groove and is expected to be one of the more exciting players in Amsterdam this summer.

Green, a native of Powell, TN, is a sophomore at East Tennessee State and has been their leadoff hitter for two years. The left handed hitter has had two solid seasons for the Bucs as he has hit over .300 in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. The 6.6 runner has also been among the team leaders in stolen bases both seasons. As a freshman he broke the schools singles record with 68.

Morin, is a sophomore at Southern Idaho JC and is transferring to Utah next season. The Park City, Utah native has ties to Amsterdam as his father Lee Morin grew up in Amsterdam and his uncle Bob Morin and grandfather Bob Morin still reside in town. At Southern Idaho, Parker hits third in their lineup and leads the team with a .375 batting average and has 19 extra-base hits. He is expected to be a middle of the order type hitter next season at Utah.

Ortman is a freshman at NW Shoals JC (AL) and is transferring to Auburn next season. The 6'4 200 pound backstop is having a monster year at NW Shoals where he is hitting .352 with 8 homeruns. The Huntsville, AL native is expected to be the front runner to be Auburn's catcher next season.

Salter, from Kingwood, TX, just completed his freshman season at Cisco JC (TX). The 6'4 right hander has been throwing consistently between 89-93 miles per hour all spring. He is expected to be a front line starter for the Mohawks this summer.

The Mohawks open their season on Thursday June 9 against the Albany Dutchmen. They will have an opening weekend giant fireworks show after their second home game on Saturday June 11. This is the first of six fireworks shows the Mohawks have on tap for the season. Other shows will be June 24, July 1, July 3, July 15, and July 29.
