Mohawks Announce Signing of 6 Pitchers

The Amsterdam Mohawks, proud members of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, have added six pitchers to their 2012 summer roster. General manager Brian Spagnola and head coach Keith Griffin have signed Tyler Costello and Derrick Brewer from Radford University, Kentucky's Sam Mahar, Auburn's Rocky McCord, Mike Hughes (Albany) from SUNY Cortland and Siena's Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth).

Tyler Costello is a redshirt freshman from South Riding, Va. After sitting out all of the 2010 spring after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Costello is having a breakout season for the Radford Highlanders of the Big South Conference and has been their number two starter all season. Through 10 starts, he has posted a 7-1 record with a 2.32 earned run average. Tyler leads the Highlanders in victories and stands second in innings pitched (66.0) and ERA. He won seven-straight decisions from Mar. 4 through Apr. 14.

Sam Mahar is a left-handed freshman pitcher from Kenosha, Wisc. He has been a part of Kentucky's historic season which at one point saw the Wildcats ranked first in the nation. Mahar, the 2011 Gatorade Wisconsin Player of the Year, has appeared in 16 games for UK and made two starts. He is 3-3 with a 3.03 earned run average and 28 strikeouts in 29.2 innings. The southpaw has not allowed an earned run in eight of his 14 relief appearances. Sam made his first collegiate start against Cincinnati on Apr. 17 and he tossed a two-hit shutout over six innings and struck out five.

Rocky McCord is a freshman pitcher from Spanish Fort, Ala. Prior to attending Auburn, he was selected in the 39th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the Minnesota Twins. This spring at Auburn, the freshman who features a fastball that has been clocked up to 94 mph, has pitched in seven games and made five starts. He has logged scoreless relief appearances against SEC foes South Carolina, Alabama and Vanderbilt.

Mike Hughes, a junior pitcher from Albany, joins the Mohawks after spending the last two summers with the PGCBL's Albany Dutchmen. Last year, Mike went undefeated in five starts and registered a 3-0 record with a 3.07 earned run average. He struck out 18 batters in 29.1 innings and was the only unbeaten Albany pitcher with multiple decisions. This spring, Mike has been one of the frontline starters for the nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. Heading into the conference tournament, Mike is 7-2 with a 2.35 earned run average. He has 61 strikeouts and 14 walks in 57.1 innings pitched. Mike leads the team with two complete games. The SUNY Cortland junior was a star pitcher at Albany High School.

Derrick Brewer is one of five returning Mohawks from a 2011 squad that won 30 games. He is a junior relief pitcher also at Radford from Montpelier, Va. For the third-straight season, Brewer has been a workhorse out of the Highlanders bullpen as a set-up man for former Mohawks Abram Williams (2010-11) and Jason Patton (2010). He is second on the team with 17 appearances all of which have come in relief. Last summer, Derrick was a PGCBL All-Star Game participant. He pitched in 25 overall games for the Mohawks and posted a 4-1 mound mark. At the end of the regular season, both Brewer and Abram Williams tied for the league lead with 21 appearances.

Broadalbin-Perth graduate Matt Gage, like Derrick Brewer, is a 2011 Mohawk returning to the Carpet City for the second summer in a row. The current Siena frosh, a 6-foot-4 southpaw, has been among the top rookie arms for the Siena Saints. He has started five games for the Saints which is third-best on the team, and pitched in 12 games overall. Matt has fanned 28 batters in 33.2 innings.

The Mohawks open their 2012 season on Wed., June 6, against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes at historic Doubleday Field. The Mohawks play their home opener on Thurs., June 7, against the Albany Dutchmen. First pitch at Shuttleworth Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. They will follow with their first fireworks show of the season at their second home game Saturday June 9.
