Mohawks Announce 2011 Infielders

March 21, 2011 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Amsterdam Mohawks News Release

The two time defending New York Collegiate League Champion Amsterdam Mohawks have announced the signing of their infielders for the 2011 season. The Mohawks, members of the newly formed Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, will be looking for a third championship in a row, as they captured the New York Collegiate League crown the past two seasons.

The Mohawks have signed four infielders for the 2011 season, and Mohawks Head Coach Keith Griffin plans to utilize their versatility at different infield positions. The four include two freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior. Mohawks General Manager Bill Terlecky commented on the group. "This is a very talented and athletic group where three of them have the ability to play shortstop. That fact gives you nice defensive flexibility and also demonstrates the athletic players that we were targeting when recruiting this group".

DeMarcus Henderson, a second baseman/shortstop at Mississippi State, shortstop Jack Fischer from Wake Forest, Matt Mack, a third baseman at Radford, and Zach Shank, a shortstop at Marist, will be the Mohawks primary four infielders this coming summer.

Henderson, a native of Waynesboro, MS is a freshman at Mississippi State and was a 43rd round draft pick in the Major League Draft by the Houston Astros out of high school last year. Henderson is expected to split time this year as a freshman but is considered to be one of the top players in the Bulldogs' future plans. In an interview last month, Mississippi State's Head Coach John Cohen raved about Henderson's athletic ability and the progress that the former All-State quarterback has made. He projected him as a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick in the 2013 draft (when he will be eligible for the draft again).

Fischer, a native of Flowood, IL, is Wake Forest's starting shortstop as a true freshman this season. While Fischer is still progressing with his bat, his defense is highly lauded. Jack has been referred to as one of the top handful of defensive shortstops in America last season in high school. His instincts and defense should excite the fans this summer at Shuttleworth Park.

Mack, a Davidsonville, MD native is a top flight proven college hitter who has hit in the middle of the Radford batting order two years in a row. Last season, the 6'1 195 pound third baseman, hit fifth in the Highlanders order and ended the season with a .309 batting average and with 8 homeruns. This season, Matt is hitting fourth in Radford's lineup and has enjoyed early season success batting .371.

Shank, a 6'1 185 pound shortstop at Marist, looks to continue a rich tradition between the Mohawks and the Red Foxes. Described as a player similar to 2010 Mohawk shortstop/third baseman and Marist standout Jon Schwind, Shank was an everyday player for Marist last season as a true freshman. In that freshman season, he hit .257 in 51 games. This year as a sophomore, the Lititz, PA native hits second in Marist's lineup and after struggling early going 1 for his first 16, has raised his average slowly up to .265 with 1 homerun.

Like the previously chronicled outfield, this talented infield comes on the heels of some very good infields comprised by the Mohawks over the past few seasons. In 2008, the Mohawks had Mike Spina (U. of Cincinnati- 11th round- now in AA ball) and Chris Bisson (U. of Kentucky-4th round) as part of their infield. The 2009 infield saw two players who are expected to be drafted highly in this year's upcoming Major League Baseball Draft, Dan Gamache (Auburn U.) and Joe Sclafani (Dartmouth College) and the 2010 infield also featured a player projected to be drafted highly this year as well in Jon Schwind (Marist).

The Mohawks open their season on Thursday June 9 against the Albany Dutchmen. They will have an opening weekend giant fireworks show after their second home game on Saturday June 11.
