Amsterdam Mohawks News Release
The two time defending New York Collegiate League Champion Amsterdam Mohawks have announced the signing of their final player for their 2011 roster, right handed pitcher/outfielder Jimmy Dykstra from LSU. The Mohawks, members of the newly formed Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, will be looking for a third championship in a row, as they captured the New York Collegiate League crown the past two seasons.
Dykstra, a San Diego, CA native, is in his sophomore season at LSU. Thus far this season, the 6'3 right hander has thrown 21 2/3 innings and has a 3-0 record for the 2009 National Champion Tigers. He has also struck out 16 batters while walking only 5.
Dykstra, with a consistent 90-93 mile per hour fastball, was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2009 out of High School but opted to attend powerhouse Yavapai Junior College in Arizona instead. After his freshman season at Yavapai, he was again drafted, this time in the 40th round by the Colorado Rockies but again opted not to sign and chose to transfer to LSU. Perfect Game USA, has Jimmy projected as a possible 4th-10th round draft pick when he is draft-eligible again next year.
Jimmy's brother Allan was a first round draft pick by the San Diego Padres while attending Wake Forest in 2008. This past winter he was traded to the New York Mets and is currently the first baseman for the Mets AA affiliate in Binghamton.
The Mohawks open their season on Thursday June 9 against the Albany Dutchmen. They will have an opening weekend giant fireworks show after their second home game on Saturday June 11.
