NEW YORK (Friday, July 9, 2004) - Major League Soccer today unveiled the 22 starters for the East and West teams for the 2004 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game to be played on Saturday, July 31 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. The League's midsummer showcase will be televised nationally, live on ABC Sports beginning at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
Seven players will be making their first All-Star appearance, including 17-year old MetroStars midfielder Eddie Gaven, who becomes the youngest player ever selected to start an All-Star game. With his ninth selection, San Jose Earthquakes defender Jeff Agoos is the only player in League history to be selected to all nine midseason events, having accomplished the feat with D.C. United (1996-2000) and the Earthquakes the past four seasons. The starting 11 for each team is as follows:
EAST WEST
Forwards Damani Ralph, Chicago Fire Carlos Ruiz, Los Angeles Galaxy
Jaime Moreno, D.C. United Brian Ching, San Jose Earthquakes
Midfielders DaMarcus Beasley, Chicago Fire Landon Donovan, San Jose Earthquakes
Amado Guevara, MetroStars Andreas Herzog, Los Angeles Galaxy
Chris Armas, Chicago Fire Ronnie O'Brien, Dallas Burn
Eddie Gaven, MetroStars Richard Mulrooney, San Jose Earthquakes

Ryan Nelsen, D.C. United Cory Gibbs, Dallas Burn
Jim Curtin, Chicago Fire Jeff Agoos, San Jose Earthquakes
Frankie Hejduk, Columbus Crew Chris Albright, Los Angeles Galaxy
Goalkeeper Henry Ring, Chicago Fire Pat Onstad, San Jose Earthquakes
Eight of ten MLS teams are represented in the starting lineups for the Eastern and Western Conferences, with the defending MLS Cup Champion San Jose Earthquakes (Landon Donovan, Pat Onstad, Richard Mulrooney, Brian Ching and Agoos) and runners-up Chicago Fire (Henry Ring, Damani Ralph, Chris Armas, DaMarcus Beasley, Jim Curtin) leading each conference with five representatives each. The MetroStars (Eddie Pope, Amado Guevara and Gaven) and Los Angeles Galaxy (Chris Albright, Andreas Herzog, Carlos Ruiz) are next in line with three contributions to each conference, while hosts D.C. United (Jaime Moreno, Ryan Nelsen) and the Dallas Burn (Cory Gibbs, Ronnie O'Brien) also have multiple starters. The Colorado Rapids (Pablo Mastroeni) and Columbus Crew (Frankie Hejduk) round out the selections, while the Kansas City Wizards and New England Revolution await Monday's announcement of reserves to determine their team's representation.
Six reserve players per team, as well as the two Commissioner's picks, will be announced on Monday, July 12, and the rosters for the MLS Reunion Match featuring stars from the 1994 World Cup in a U.S. vs. the World format will follow on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
The 22 players were elected through voting by (a) fans, (b) media, (c) players and (d) coaches and general managers with each group representing 25 percent of the final tally. Voting was managed by J. Patton Sports Marketing Inc. as independent arbiter. Eddie Pope was the leading vote-getter among players, tied with Landon Donovan among coaches and GM ballots. Donovan and Pope also led the way among the soccer media while Donovan was the favorite in the fan balloting, followed by DaMarcus Beasley, Pope and Carlos Ruiz.
Following the results of the weekend's round of MLS regular season matches, Peter Nowak (D.C. United) and Sigi Schmid (Los Angeles Galaxy), head coaches of the leaders in the Eastern and Western Conferences respectively, have been selected to manage the East and West teams at the 2004 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game on Saturday, July 31 at RFK Stadium. The ninth annual All-Star showcase will be televised live on ABC Sports from RFK Stadium beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET. Nowak and Schmid have coached against one another twice this season. D.C. United and the Galaxy tied 1-1 on April 10 at The Home Depot Center and the Galaxy defeated United at RFK Stadium by the score of 4-2 on May 19.
Prior to the July 31 East vs. West contest, MLS will honor its tradition, history and pioneers by hosting an MLS Reunion Match, which will feature players who participated in the 1994 World Cup and then went on to play in MLS. The celebration game will kick off at 12:30 p.m. ET, with two 25-minute halves divided by a 10-minute halftime, with MLS USA stars vs. MLS World heroes. The MLS-USA team will be coached by current Honduras technical director Bora Milutinovic, the only manager in FIFA World Cup history to have guided five different nations in the World Cup finals (Mexico - '86; Costa Rica - '90; USA - '94; Nigeria - '98; China - '02). The MLS-World squad will be coached by former D.C. United and current U.S. National Team Manager Bruce Arena.
"Major League Soccer is a legacy of the 1994 World Cup, which remains the most successful FIFA event in history," said Garber on June 17, when the 2004 format was announced. "Our July 31 event in the nation's capital will allow us to pay tribute to the landmark achievements for the sport of soccer during the last 10 years. Our League is built upon the efforts and trailblazing spirit of that event and those who played in MLS during the early years, starting the modern soccer boom in the U.S. We will also honor America's soccer future, the youth players of today, throughout the weekend."
During the live telecast of the 2004 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game on ABC, Sierra Mist will award one lucky viewer a spot as a contestant in the Pepsi "Play For A Billion" Sweepstakes. The winning sweepstakes code will be announced live during the Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game and the person with the winning number will travel to Los Angeles, Calif. in September to appear on the televised one-hour prime-time special and compete for a chance to win the $1 billion prize. One of the "Play For A Billion" contestants is guaranteed to win $1 million.
The 2004 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game is the main attraction of a weekend extravaganza of soccer-themed events and programs, all of which aim to pay tribute to the future of American soccer. Thousands of the 15 million registered youth participants under the age of 18 will have the opportunity throughout the weekend to see, touch and feel the approachable heroes of Major League Soccer past and present. Through clinics, on-field presentations, pre-game and halftime ceremonies, "Soccer Celebration" events for families and youth, player autograph sessions and more, MLS will recognize the importance of youth participation as the future of our sport.
The 2004 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game featuring MLS All-Stars and the MLS Celebration Match celebrating the 1994 World Cup offers six levels of ticket pricing, ranging from $25 to $60 for individuals, and $16 to $40 for groups of varying sizes. Tickets are on sale now. For Group Sales information, call D.C. United at (703) 587-5000; or go online at www.dcunited.com and at RFK Stadium advance sales during all D.C. United home games. For individual tickets call TicketMaster - (202) 432 - SEAT (metro D.C.); (410) 481 - SEAT (Baltimore & MD); (703) 573 - SEAT (Virginia); or go online at www.ticketmaster.com and at all TicketMaster outlets including HECHT's, Tower Records and at RFK Stadium.
Soccer fans in the nation's capital have proven to be some of the country's most loyal as shown by United's average attendance over the club's nine-year history which has been greater than 15,000 since the League's inception. United's average home attendance of 19,191 after six games in the 2004 regular season ranks second in the League. The fans turned out in large numbers once again on Aug. 3, 2002 as 31,096 braved violent thunderstorms at the 2002 All-Star Game in which the MLS All-Stars defeated the U.S. National Team 3-2. RFK Stadium, also host of the 1997 and 2000 MLS Cup championship finals, is home to D.C.'s passionate and knowledgeable supporters clubs including the Screaming Eagles and Barra Brava, which have repeatedly given United one of the most intimidating home-field advantages in MLS.

Goalkeepers: (1)
Henry Ring (27yrs - Chicago Fire) - Now in his fourth MLS season, Ring finally won the starting job in Chicago after serving as back-up to Zach Thornton for three years. The native of Tennessee, who had played in just two MLS matches since joining the League in 2001, has taken full advantage and registered a League-leading six shutouts in his 14 starts. His 1.07 goals against average ranks third in the League as his poise and consistent play in his penalty box have earned him his first All-Star selection.
Defenders: (4)
Frankie Hejduk (29yrs - Columbus Crew) - The 2004 All-Star Game will mark Hejduk's second consecutive All-Star selection since returning to MLS last year after his time in the German Bundesliga. Although elected as a defender, the versatile Hejduk has assumed more of a midfield role with the Crew this year and he has been able to contribute two goals while starting in nine matches. Known for his tireless work rate on the right flank since being selected to his first All-Star Game back in 1998, the two-time World Cup veteran is arguably the best right flank player in MLS and his performances have made him a regular and dependable member of the U.S. National Team.
Eddie Pope (30yrs - MetroStars) - Now in his second season with the MetroStars, the accomplished central defender and arguably the best in U.S. history, has been selected to the All-Star Game for eight consecutive years. The U.S. National Team stalwart and two-time World Cup veteran ('98, '02) made an immediate impact upon moving to the MetroStars before the 2003 season, wearing the captain's armband and bringing his settling and commanding presence to the back line. The 1997 MLS Defender of the Year and three-time MLS Best XI selection made his name with D.C. United from 1996 to 2002, capturing three MLS Cup titles and scoring several key goals along the way.
Jim Curtin (25yrs - Chicago Fire) - A fixture in central defense for the Chicago Fire since joining the team as a rookie in 2001, Curtin has started every match for his club dating back to the start of the 2002 MLS Cup Playoffs, including all 14 games this year. While his 6-4 frame makes him one of the most dominant players in the air, he is also effective at starting the team's attack from the back, where he has a knack of being in the right place at the right time.
Ryan Nelsen (26yrs - D.C. United) - The D.C. United and New Zealand National Team captain whose leadership and vocal presence have established him as one of the League's elite defenders, will be making his second consecutive All-Star appearance. After missing several matches due to World Cup Qualifying this year, Nelsen's return coincided with his team moving into first place in the Eastern Conference. The fourth overall selection in the 2001 SuperDraft, Nelsen will be playing on his home field at RFK Stadium alongside fellow D.C. United teammate and All-Star starting forward Jaime Moreno.
Midfielders: (4)
DaMarcus Beasley (22yrs - Chicago Fire) - At the age of 22, Beasley will be participating in his fourth consecutive All-Star Game. A regular on the U.S. National Team and a veteran of the 2002 World Cup, Beasley is considered among the best young players in the world. His accelerating runs up and down the left flank and tireless play on both sides of the ball have made him an invaluable member for both club and country.
Chris Armas (31yrs - Chicago Fire) - Chicago's captain and U.S. National Team regular earns his seventh consecutive All-Star selection, all since joining the Fire in the club's first year of existence in 1998. The central holding midfielder, who has also contributed key goals for his club throughout the years, is a proven team leader and commands respect around the League for his work ethic, professionalism and consistency. The five-time MLS Best XI selection was elected to the 2002 MLS All-Star Game but watched from the sidelines due to a season-ending ACL tear which also kept him out of the 2002 World Cup squad.
Eddie Gaven (17yrs - MetroStars) - The youngest player in history to be voted in as an All-Star starter, the 17-year-old midfielder earns his first selection in a season which has seen him emerge as a star with the MetroStars. After starting just seven matches in his rookie year in 2003, Gaven has been a fixture in all 15 matches for his team this year, scoring four goals and registering five assists. One of the most skilful players in all MLS, Gaven is a key element of the MetroStars attack, combining spectacular dribbling runs with creative passing skills. His performances in 2004 have resulted in a call-up with the senior U.S. National Team which plays Poland on Sunday, July 11 in Chicago. The former Under-17, Under-20 and Under-23 National Team star would become the fourth youngest player in U.S. history to earn a cap if he were to take the field for Bruce Arena's squad. If he appears in the 2004 All-Star Game he would become the second youngest player to appear in the history of the event.
Amado Guevara (28yrs - MetroStars) - The Honduran National Team captain and MetroStars playmaker, who makes his second consecutive All-Star appearance, is the club's leading scorer with five goals and six assists in 2004, which currently tie him for second place on the League scoring charts. Since joining MLS last season, "El Lobo" Guevara is considered among the most skilful players in the League with his control and command of the ball second to none. With his international experience and expert vision, he has been able to take over the reins of a MetroStars squad which has incorporated several new elements over the last two seasons.
Forwards: (2)
Damani Ralph (23yrs - Chicago Fire) - The reigning MLS Rookie of the Year will be making his first career All-Star appearance in 2004. Following up on his 11 goals last year, which set an all-time rookie record, the Jamaican international currently leads his team with six goals this season. His unpredictable and explosive play at forward has made for several spectacular strikes including the 2003 Goal of the Year.
Jaime Moreno (30yrs - D.C. United) - The nine-year MLS veteran has experienced a rejuvenating season in his return to D.C. United as he makes his first All-Star appearance since 2000. The former Bolivian international currently leads the club in scoring with four goals and six assists. Following two consecutive injury-plagued seasons, including a 2003 campaign with the MetroStars in which he only started seven matches, Moreno has missed just two matches in 2004. Most importantly he has shown his form of old, turning in vintage performances featuring his trademark runs at defenders from midfield. A three-time MLS Cup champion with United (1996, 1997, 1999), Moreno is the last player remaining from the original 1996 squad.
Eastern Conference Head Coach
Peter Nowak (D.C. United) - Nowak, in his first year as a head coach, has guided D.C. United to first place in the Eastern Conference on the strength of 20 points (5-5-5) and will lead the East squad on United's home field of RFK Stadium. United handed the MetroStars a 6-2 defeat on Saturday, July 3 to take over first place in the East for the first time since Opening Day. Nowak, at the age of 39, became D.C. United head coach in January 2004 following a decorated playing career which included five years as captain of the Chicago Fire. A veteran of the German Bundesliga, a former Polish National Team captain and a three-time MLS All-Star, Nowak led the Fire to the 1998 MLS Cup title and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships in 2000 and 2001. Nowak will be the third D.C. United head coach to lead an All-Star contingent after Bruce Arena (1997, 1998) and Thomas Rongen (1999).

Goalkeepers: (1)
Pat Onstad (36yrs - San Jose Earthquakes) - The Canadian international makes his first All-Star appearance after a debut season in 2003 which saw him earn MLS Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Onstad immediately entered the group of elite MLS goalkeepers in 2003 with the culminating moment coming on a penalty kick save in MLS Cup 2003 which helped the Earthquakes win their second title in three years. Onstad's surehanded abilities in the penalty box and his vocal leadership on the back line have made him a towering presence in goal.
Defenders: (4)
Pablo Mastroeni (27yrs - Colorado Rapids) - An MLS All-Star for the last five seasons, Mastroeni has distinguished himself as one of MLS' elite defenders while earning international acclaim with spectacular performances for the U.S. National Team. After joining the Colorado Rapids in 2002, Mastroeni's play earned him a spot on the 2002 World Cup squad in Korea, where he started three matches and has been a mainstay of the U.S. squad ever since. While proving his mettle at both central midfield and central defense with both club and country, the 27-year-old is now a permanent fixture as a defender with his timing, speed and foot skills making him dominant force on a Rapids team which has allowed the fewest goals in MLS.
Cory Gibbs (24yrs - Dallas Burn) - Gibbs earns his first All-Star selection in his debut season in the League after spending three years in Germany, where he became the youngest American to play a full match in the Bundesliga. A classy and slick defender, Gibbs has immediately established himself in MLS, becoming a regular U.S. National Team call-up. An overall complete defender with a combination of size and speed, Gibbs is a fixture in central defense for the Dallas Burn.
Jeff Agoos (36yrs - San Jose Earthquakes) - One of the most decorated U.S. players of all-time, Agoos will be making his ninth career All-Star appearance after playing in each of the previous eight editions of the event. The experienced defender and veteran of the 2002 World Cup known for his accurate left footed shot has won more MLS Cup championship rings than any player in the history of the League, capturing his fifth title last year as captain of the Earthquakes. Since Agoos left RFK Stadium and D.C. United in 2001, he has helped build a new winning tradition in San Jose, serving as the anchor of the team in central defense despite an injury-riddled 2004 season.
Chris Albright (25yrs - Los Angeles Galaxy) - Albright earns his first All-Star selection as a right back after five previous seasons in which he alternated between forward and midfield positions. The experimental move to right back with the U.S. National Team became permanent before the MLS season as Albright has redefined himself as a defender with both club and country after entering the League in 1999 as a highly-touted goal-scoring forward. His performances on the Galaxy back line, characterized by tireless runs up and down the right flank have made him an irreplaceable member of the starting lineup.
Midfielders: (4)
Landon Donovan (22yrs - San Jose Earthquakes) - The U.S. National Team star makes his fourth consecutive All-Star appearance. While starting the season at forward, Donovan has appeared of late in midfield for club and country. The multitalented native of California continues to show his ability to decide games singlehandedly, with sudden flashes of individual brilliance and darting runs in the opposition's half. With every season that has passed since his arrival in 2001, Donovan has assumed a greater leadership role, at times carrying both San Jose and the U.S. National Team with sheer passion and determination.
Andreas Herzog (35yrs - Los Angeles Galaxy) - The former Austrian international earns his first All-Star selection in his debut season in MLS with the Galaxy. Herzog, who has started every match for Los Angeles, is the Galaxy's de facto playmaker with his refined left foot and pinpoint passing jumpstarting most of the club's attacks. A set piece specialist and a constant threat with his long-distance service, Herzog's experience has proven priceless to a team which kicked off its first season without Mauricio Cienfuegos, the team's original playmaker. A World Cup veteran (1990, 1998) and long-time player in the German and Austrian Bundesliga, Herzog tends to shift to the left side of midfield where he can pick apart the opposing defense with his left-footed strikes. He has four goals and five assists on the season.
Ronnie O'Brien (25yrs - Dallas Burn) - After joining the League in the middle of the 2002 season and missing most of the 2003 season due to a broken leg, O'Brien has not missed a single minute of action this season as he makes his first All-Star appearance. An explosive midfielder gifted with quick feet, creativity and sudden bursts of acceleration, O'Brien is an established attacking threat down the right flank for the Burn. A former Republic of Ireland youth international, the Juventus (Italy) and Middlesbrough (England) product sets the tone for his team with his energy and relentless work rate.
Richard Mulrooney (27yrs - San Jose Earthquakes) - In his sixth season with San Jose, Mulrooney will be making his second career All-Star appearance after being elected in 2002. In recent years the central midfielder has assumed a leadership role on the squad, making critical contributions on both sides of the ball winning possession with decisive tackling and immediately relaunching the Earthquakes attack with his accurate passing. Ever since he joined the League in 1999, his decision-making skills have made him more of a distributor than a scorer from midfield and he has another six assists to his name this year. One of the longest serving members of the team including the leaner years, Mulrooney is the constant in an Earthquakes team that has captured two MLS Cup titles in three years.
Forwards: (2)
Brian Ching (26yrs - San Jose Earthquakes) - Following a promising 2003 season which was cut short due to an Achilles tendon injury, Ching picked up where he left off this year with a team-leading seven goals in 14 games, the second highest total in MLS entering this weekend's play. A classic target forward and a dominant aerial presence in attack, Ching has also established himself as a strong finisher. After coming on slow at the start of 2004 as he recovered from the Achilles injury, Ching regained his spot in the starting lineup. His performances won him the attention of U.S. National Team Head Coach Bruce Arena, who called him up ahead of the U.S. squad's upcoming match against Poland on Sunday in Chicago. Ching will be looking for his first international cap since he appeared in May of 2003 against Wales.
Carlos Ruiz (24yrs - Los Angeles Galaxy) - One of the most prolific scorers in MLS history, "El Pescadito" Ruiz is once again atop the goal-scoring charts after leading MLS in goals in each of his first two seasons. The Guatemalan National Team captain and 2003 MLS All-Star MVP is a pure finisher who can create goals out of nothing. Ruiz was forced to sit out a month due to an ankle injury but shortly after his return to the starting lineup this year, he did not miss a beat, immediately regaining the League lead in goals (8) with his two goals this past weekend against San Jose.
Western Conference Head Coach
Sigi Schmid (Los Angeles Galaxy) - The Los Angeles Galaxy coaching staff will lead the West All-Star team after finishing atop the Western Conference with a League-best 27 points (8-5-3) following the team's 2-1 victory over the defending champion San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday night behind two goals by Carlos "El Pescadito" Ruiz. Schmid will be taking the helm of an All-Star team for the first time in his MLS career. Galaxy coaches have been part of the mid-summer festivities on two other occasions as Lothar Osiander (1996) and Octavio Zambrano (1998) finished on the losing end of All-Star score lines. The 51-year-old Schmid has led the Galaxy to every major club championship in the United States and the CONCACAF region since taking over the reins of the squad six games into the 1999 season. Currently in his sixth season with the club, Schmid has guided the Galaxy to MLS Cup 2002, the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2000 CONCACAF Champions Cup. A fixture on the California soccer scene, Schmid served as head coach of his alma mater UCLA for 19 seasons prior to joining the Galaxy and he led the Bruins to three NCAA championships and 16 consecutive postseason appearances. Of his various roles with U.S. Soccer over the years, Schmid was also an assistant for Bora Milutinovic on the 1994 U.S. World Cup team, which will be celebrated on July 31 with an MLS Reunion Game featuring several of the players on that squad.
