MLL Week 10 Preview
August 9, 2019 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Boston, MA - You know that message on your car mirrors, "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear." That message currently rings true in Major League Lacrosse, with three teams tied for first in the standings with the New York Lizards and Dallas Rattlers on their heels. Week Ten should provide some clarity. Here are some of the storylines heading into this weekends critical matchups.
Atlanta Blaze vs. Boston Cannons: Saturday, August 10th
The Cannons come into this one with a share of first place thanks to their 16-13 victory over the Denver Outlaws last weekend. The Blaze, meanwhile, are in the fourth and final playoff spot, but have the Lizards and Rattlers breathing down their necks.
Alex Woodall: Last weekend against the Rattlers, Woodall played his best game as a professional. Woodall went 26-33 at the faceoff X and collected 19 ground balls against the Dallas Rattlers. Woodall is now the Blaze's single season record holder in faceoff won (169) and GB (97).
Cannons Balanced Attack: Mark Cockerton leads the Cannons with 29 goals and is tied in the lead for points with 34. Cockerton has received plenty of help this year with six players scoring double digit goals (Cockerton, Sands, Williams, O'Hara, Jackson, and Rogers.)
Familiar Matchup: Both the Blaze and Cannons are familiar with one another as this will be their third matchup in less than a month. On July 13th, the Cannons beat the Blaze 17-16. On July 20th, the Blaze beat the Cannons 15-12.
Denver Outlaws vs. Chesapeake Bayhawks: Saturday, August 10th
The Outlaws travel to Annapolis to take on the Bayhawks in a potential Championship Weekend preview. Both teams sit at 6-3. The winner of this game guarantees at least a share of first place heading into Week 12.
Denver on the Schneid: The Outlaws come into this one on a two-game losing streak after suffering back-to-back losses to the Dallas Rattlers and the Boston Cannons. The Cannons started the year 6-1. The Outlaws rely heavily on net-minder Dillon Ward's performance. Despite having an extremely strong season overall, the veteran has given up 17 goals on 30 shots in his last two games.
Heacock Back on Attack: Colin Heacock was moved back to attack last weekend and the move proved dividends for Dave Cottle's side. Heacock scored ten goals in two games, earning him Warrior Offensive Player of the Week Honors.
Lizards vs. Rattlers: Saturday, August 10th
You simply can't understate how important this game is to both the Lizards and Rattlers. Both teams sit near the bottom of the MLL standings, but a win this weekend puts them in a prime position to make a run at the postseason. With a little help this weekend from the Cannons, the winner of this game could end the week only one game out of a playoff spot.
Rattlers Faceoff Struggles: Despite beating the Blaze last weekend, the Rattlers had major problems at the faceoff X. The Rattlers went 7-33 at the faceoff. Currently, the Rattlers are last in the MLL faceoff ranking this season, with a faceoff percentage of 39.59%.
Lizards Need to Rebound: The Lizards lost two games to the Chesapeake Bayhawks last weekend. They were outscored 35-16 in the two games. The Lizards need a win against the Rattlers to try and keep their season afloat.
